Victorian newsagents should be aware that the police can now issue instant fines for shoplifters where the value of the theft is under $600. The Australian Retailer’s Association has lobbied for this for some time.

just to remind you all to put Derwent pencils and street directories in a visible area.

I had a great idea last year with street directories.
We used to have heaps of people just walk in and ask for them, only to have them find where they are going, leave dirt and grease on it, dog ear the pages and at the end not buy it.
I now put glad wrap around each one about twice, so they either but it straight away because they’re lost or looking for a work site or if they’re really hard done by I try to give some assistance.
They really do walk out the door now.

Michael,
Being one who had 7 Street Directories “walk out the door” within half an hour of them being put on the shelf. I am concerned at what you mean by “walk out the door”

I mean they sell a lot better, about two and a half times as much.
Who would steal 7 directories anyway?

There is a ready market around the pubs for cheap directories in Sydney or was at that time
