Promoting issue #2 of Master Chef magazine

fhn-master-chef-june2010.JPGWe are promoting the latest issue of Master Chef magazine with a terrific aisle end display as well as a tall display unit next to our main newspaper stand plus two locations in our regular magazine aisles – with weeklies as well as food titles. We have been able to get the stock we needed so supply is not a challenge. Our goal is to beat the sales for issue one.  We will leave most displays / location in place for at least a week.

Our product placement decisions for Master Chef and most titles we promote are all about driving impulse purchases. My view is that newsagents can significantly lift magazine sales with less time spent on pretty displays and more on strategic placement. The key is to watch traffic and customer interaction for interruption opportunities.

Carol, that’s odd. it should have sold well – at the counter, next to newspapers and with weekly magazines.

We had 2 returns last time and had our supply cut by 2/3rds!!

Mark, you seem to forget that not everywhere has the same mix of people. I tried it at the front, on the counter and in the food section and sold a grand total of one copy last issue. Similarly, there has been negligible interest in the World Cup here despite displays in equivalent spots.

Chris, I reckon that given time it could work anywhere. It has a mass appeal. The key is finding the right location in a store for the title.

My enthusiasm for the title is based on sales data I have seen from over 100 stores in all sorts of situations.

I am a bit disappointed in the sales of this magazine as well. Sold 10 in the first day last month and sold out, received more stock a week later and then sold 2 for the rest of the month. This time we have recieved 30 and sold 3 so far, and that is having it placed at the counter as well as in weeklies and in food, hoping to capture all audiences. Did the sell out in the day loose my sales from then on? Who knows! Personally I am a bit diappointed in the magazine, full of ads (did expect some, but I think they have over done it) and recipes that the average person doesn’t have time to make. Oh well, lets hope that not all my customers feel the same as me.
