Using the lottery counter for impulse purchases

counter-opp.jpgI saw this in another newsagency this week and share it here for others – placing roll wrap and giftwrap tape just below the lottery serving counter.  Click on the image to see a larger version of the photo.  While doing this is probably against lottery company rules, I’d expect many of their representatives to turn a blind eye for Christmas – especially if you are promoting their lottery products outside the usual area in a reciprocal move.

I was just curious if it’s awkward to complete the transaction (passing cash and tickets) when the customers are a fair distance away from the counter. Or is the display built into the counter. Can’t easily see with the small (an “larger”) picture. I was thinking of doing this with our store but wanted to consider the impact first.

And in regards to the talk about christmas we were having. Christmas is really picking up now, maybe just a later than usual start?

mal, the key is to not come out too far with this type of display.

Mal, this type of display also makes it harder for snatch and grabs to occur

Have done something similar with the limited space I have and it does seem to drive resonable impulse wrap purchases. I’ve just made sure we’ve left a “channel” into direct contact with the counter so the elderly can get in close if they have to.

Overall so far my Newsagency counter sales are about on par with last year but my post counter as of Wednesday last week had sold more loose stamps, stamp books and prepaid satchels than the entire Christmas period last year with what should be at least another 8 days of strong post sales to go. Quite unexpected considering the general downward mail trends but happily received.
