Newsagency management tip: treat your landlord like a customer

  1. Put your landlord on your customer list so they receive your regular customer communications.
  2. Always send seasonal catalogues and flyers to them.
  3. Ask them for business – copying, stationery and the like.
  4. Make special offers to them.
  5. Send them a Christmas card.
  6. Send them a birthday card.

All of this will show the landlord that you are a proactive retailer, someone working hard to attract shoppers to their property.

Lance too often newsagents and other independent retailers think they should only engage with their landlord in the lead up to lease negotiations. This is a mistake.

Helen let me know if you need help navigating a landlord issue. I’e seen some landlords be very helpful recently. They need guidance to be helpful though.

My ambition is to be a landlord – just as soon as I’ve made enough money out of being a newsagent.
I wonder if my tenants will be scumbags or will they pay the rent on time and take very good care of my property.
Seriously I want to know why we spend more time talking about landlords (33 dedicated posts) than we do about employees (1 dedicated post). In our case our wages bill is 8 times our rent and each employee has huge potential (positive and negative) to impact our business every minute that they’re on site.

    Azeem,

My post was positive about landlords.

On employees, I have covered issues about them and relating to them in 100s of posts. Your count is wrong.

Also on employees, you hire them, manage them, motivate them and fire them. It all comes back to you as the employer.
