The Submissive author supports Australian newsagents

I asked the author of the Submissive to remind her thousands of Twitter followers that hew book is available from newsagents. She obliged!  Nice.  An excellent example of how we as a retail channel can engage with authors and brands through Twitter. All we had to do was ask.

Do newsagents sell submissive for $10 as this is the price the competitors are selling it for going into christmas on national adverts?
I looked into it but would only look expensive if I did. I know price is not the only driver but it is a big one.

Carol that made me laugh , you do realise you do not have to read it .The tittle pretty much says what the book is about and if you are the type that would be offened by it then you shouldn’t pick it up in the first place .

    Carol,

If you’re interested in playing the role of moral police, then there are plenty of mainstream publications that would need to be returned ahead of this book.

How dare you judge what other people enjoy.

Just had to lol at Carol’s comment.

And Jarryd, we finally agree on something.

I didn,t think Carol was judging others, just voicing her own opinion of a product.

We all draw a line in the sand as to what we will sell according to our own moral compass. Some people wont sell cigarettes and deny people the right to kill themselves and harm others. (i’m a smoker unforntunately).

We have a right to sell what we feel comfortable with and customers have a right to buy what they want from somewere. Everbody should be happy with that.

    Leon,

Everyone has the right to choose what they sell, yes. However there is a difference between “mummy-porn”, as the books have been dubbed, and cigarettes. We know cigarettes are both addictive and harmful to people’s health. The same cannot be said for these books. For many these books are liberating and I am not aware of any major adverse side-effects of reading such material. In fact if the books encourage healthy discussion about sex and even increase the amount of sex people are having, then one could very easily argue that these books are actually good for both mental and physical health.

People are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

    Jarryd,

I have no idea what facts you are talking about relating to either Carols entry or my reply.

People are entitled to an opinion – yes

People have the right to sell what they want – Yes (within the law of course)

People can buy what they want – Yes & ditto.

Healthy sex lives – mental & physical health yada yada yada. Nothing to do with Carols original casual comment.

I think your original reply was ill thought out. You accused her of being the moral police and finished by writing ” how dare you judge what other people enjoy”

All she did was voice her own personal opinion – thats hurts no-one. Its sad lines that people can’t voice an opinion without being attacked.

Remember – opinions are like bums – everyones got one

you wont be able to say anything like the above under labours proposed new anti discrimination laws, anything said that offends somebody else will be unlawful

    Leon,

People can voice their opinion all they want, but in doing so they open the content of that opinion up for critique.

Carol made the assertion that the books were “sick” and “far worse than any men’s magazines”. She is entitled to have that opinion but when she puts it out in the public sphere it is fair game to criticise that opinion if it doesn’t align with the facts.

Carol did not simply make a personal judgement as to what she is comfortable selling. She made a public statement that made a negative inference towards those who choose to read said “sick” books. My comment regarding mental and physical health was in rebutal this inference.

If one wants to state their opinion they should be prepared to defend it.

    Rick,

The proposed legisaltion would not work quite so simply regarding offence. However I think we would both agree that such laws would be ridiculous. No one has the right to not be offended.

i will be offended if the laws are passed, can i then use those news laws that offend me to claim retribution from those offending me?
Im not being serious btw, take a chill pill everyone. I sell stuff i dont agree with everyday, i bank the money happily and sleep well at night.

    Jarryd,

I don’t think Carol voiced an opinion based on facts but more on her feelings. Facts can always be disputed after all the world is no longer flat. Feeling are a little harder if at all possible to dispute.

Not sure I believe an opinion has to be defended. I think they are an entitlement

It doesn’t matter whether I agree with the opinion or not, I respect someone’s right to have that view.

I felt you reponse was a little harsh and unfeeling. At the end of the day we are lucky to be able to sell or not sell, buy or not buy, read or not read. Some may consider said book sick others sic. We still have that freedom – for now anyway…..

I had not gone back and read this post so I am bit surprised by the attention my post has recieved. I am old enough to have been around when Lady Chatleys Lover was banned. I’m not going to defend my opinion. Thankyou to the lovely people who defend my right to have one.

    Leon,

Having an opinion is an entitlement, yes. I have not said otherwise. However, the right to have an opinion does not negate the responsibility to defend or justify it. Should a person who thinks that other races are inferior not have to defend that opinion when challenged? Should a person who believes homeopathy cures cancer not have to justify that opinion when questioned? All rights come with responsibilities.

Respecting one’s right to have an opinion should not be confused with respecting the opinion itself. If one’s opinion affects others then it does matter if you agree with it or not.

    Carol,

No one has sought to deny you your right to have an opinion.

You have made a judgement on what you think is best for others. I would have no problem with this if such a judgement were supported by evidence.

I wonder what you would do if one of your junior staff wanted to purchase this book? or one of the men’s magazines?
