European newsagents protest

Plenty of newsagents were among the tobacco retailers protesting in Brussels yesterday about the Tobacco Products Directive.

It is interesting to see the public protect approach by the aggrieved retailers.  The health issues aside, it’s good to see the retailers making their complaints public.

It’s a shingle issue for them. The tobacco retail outlets are part and parcel of the newsagency network. They are called “Tabaks”. It means a typical European instead of going to a newsagency to get his/her smokes, he/she goes to a Tabak to get his /her paper. Like a lot of beauraucratic edicts this one hasn’t been thought through.
