Poor information from Tatts barcode changes

Tatts started rolling our barcodes per product over the last couple of days and failed to advise those who help newsagents deal with such technology changes.

For a company that spends considerable sums on rating the customer service newsagents provide this barcode roll out is poor form. The company will see consider this blog post to be unfair criticism. Hey, I did not decide on the barcode change and neglect to properly inform stakeholders. Tatts people need to judge their actions to the standard they judge their retailers.

The lack of information from Tatts is amazing. Not a word from them in the Outlet Bulletin. Just worked out that Winners Circle renewals are another barcode setup. We are not mushrooms!

It amazes me that Tatts/Golden Casket are trying to sell this as a service to Retailers yet they give 0 communication when they make changes. I am sure they do not treat 7-11 this way and will not treat coles/woolies with such disdain either when they start rolling out there.

‘james’ it’s not funny with information being provided late, costing newsagents and others wasted time. Tatts is demanding of their retailers so they should be as demanding of themselves.

Barcodes on individual tickets are a bit like a hip pocket in a singlet – next to useless!
We are finding that we only use the barcode on single or maybe double ticket sales, who wants to scan multiple tickets on a busy day. Then if there are payouts in the transaction then individual ticket scanning is of no value.

Wouldn’t it be better to produce a docket at the end of the transaction with the total value on it (and make it optional for those who don’t want to ring up lotto sales)?

I don’t think Tatts had the interests of busy outlets in mind when they designed this one!

Designed really? Its all for the big 2 nothing and I mean nothing to do with there Newsagents. And guess what? try not to do your shop fit and lets see what happens there.

I had heard about the POS barcodes a while back and they were confirmed as coming soon in a Qld Retailer Memo on 3/10/13, with “further information..available in the Important News section of Retailers Web”. I never checked Retailers Web or my POS supplier notices (because I am on a really old system) but I thought the basic idea of POS barcodes on lotto tickets was a good one to help with balancing and security at the end of the day. I do however understand the frustration at the lack of communication, especially for POS suppliers.

Jim, your point about the total value docket at the end of the transaction is spot on. Whether the value be positive or negative.

Jim I understand that a single docket at the end would be quicker to use however it would take away the ability to compare sales on the different games. In our situation we would prefer to know how Sat Lotto is performing compared to powerball etc.

This also make balancing the lotto machine vs the pos eos easier if there are discrepancies.

Hi Jack, you can go to Tatts retailer web to compare sales

And don’t try to use the multiplier keys on the Tower keyboard when you sell several tickets of the same value. Normally 3 gives you 3 times the scanned article value .. not with Tatts barcode … it cancels the multiple and gives you the value of one. Makes balancing lotto sales a tad difficult 🙁

FYI there is no issue with leading zeros on the barcode that others are claiming. It all comes down to scanner settings.

Eric it’s not an issue with current hardware. With very old keyboards, 10+ years old, you need a different sequence. The help desk can help.

Jono – Tatts retailer web won’t tell me my average basket size with specific tickets. Also won’t tell me what items sell with with specific games. Better data gives me more power as a retailer.

Jack – by all means barcode individual tickets (but put the barcode in the right place) for those who want the analysis you do, all I am suggesting is an additional (and optional) barcode on a docket at the end giving the total transaction value.
