Magazine distributor IPS completes today’s trifecta of magazine oversupply of small business newsagents

A newsagent contacted me this morning to advice IPS, the Fairfax owned magazine distributor, has supplied 92 copies of Wild Boar magazine in response to sales data showing net average sales of 39 copies.

This oversupply will cost the newsagent time, labour and cash. it will cost the publisher service fees – as the distributor is paid regardless – and production costs as a result of early returns being trashed.

Do you think this oversupply by IPS is unethical?

Yes we rec 35, usually sell between 10 and 15, IPS is worse than the other 2 as I can’t early return.

Yep went from 10 with returns to 15 , wasn’t that long ago that everyone loved the IPS model now its turned to S%^t because without early returns it is open to abuse

Photoshop Projects bonus pack contains the 2013 annual as the front mag in the 2pack for 19.95 Return week 29. About 200 magazines so far have come off the shelf before their return date just to fit what has arrived this morning. We cannot give up early returns with this totally out of hand oversupply. Under the rules set out in the trial all of this is totally acceptable behaviour by the distribution companies

I remain overall happy with IPS. Sure there are some dud titles but I like that I have more control than with any other company.

Eric and Brett I didn’t know you could only get the newspaper items only ? I closed my IPS account because all they carry that I want is International express , Winning Post and Best Bets.

Had a phone call from Horse Deals a while ago saying they are thinking of going to IPS from Network and would I open an account with IPS.
I have an account with IPS already but hope they stay with Network, most months I receive double what I sell but at least it is easy to early return if I choose to.
I was not aware that we can early return with IPS.

Jenny, Horse deals one of my favorites and better sellers though still oversupplied from current network by 30 to 40 %.

IPS have decided to not allow Publisher client magazines into the subagents we service.
    Guys,

I have said time and time again, if I can’t early return, based on subagent returns to us, we will not stock/distribute to subagents.

If you’re a publisher ask IPS why your magazine is not in the subagents we service.
