Pitching the BHG Colour Me title

IMG_8960We have the Better Homes and Gardens Colour Me title here with newspapers, next to girls mag like Frankie as well as with our adult colouring department. This is an easy impulse purchase opportunity – as long as we make it easy for shoppers who will purchase but may not know the title exists. This title is an excellent opportunity for newsagents.

As soon as this title reached our store I ordered another 10, but they were out of stock straight away. I have sold out after having them out for a day.

There were plenty available at the gift fair. I haven’t got the details with me at the moment. I’ve also almost sold out of colouring pencils.

Jess if you are in a group check with them as adult colouring books have been huge for newsXpress for all of 2015. There are six key suppliers of books and several in allied products. While the magazine titles are good, I make more from the products off of which I make more than 50% GP.

As soon as a magazine company colouring book lands in our store we send it straight back.
Why sell something for 25% GP when you have 50% GP colouring books on the shelf!!

Peter I disagree with you with this BHG title. 25% is better than nothing from nothing.

Peter, I thought along the same lines but glad I didnt return these. BHG is a trusted brand and the people that have come in to purchase these have surprised me. Type of customer I didnt think would be into the colouring thing at all. If the BHG book introduces more customers to colouring in then I think thats a win/win for everybody. The secret will be introducing them to our other colouring lines.

I have had a number of buyers get colouring pencils with them and adults buy expensive pencil sets. Worth it for that alone.

Mark, Allan, I can see your side that the BHG as a brand has a value, however weighing up the $2.20 profit on each colouring book against the $10 profit on colouring books purchased from other small businesses I decided to look after them.
As for magazine companies selling colouring books, to me it is outside the parameters of stock that magazine companies should be supplying us with. Will it be colour pencils or something else next at 25% GP?
I have drawn a line in the sand with mag companies.

On coloured pencils, definitely have increased sales in that area of all the top brands.

I like the Better Homes title as it helped me sell more color titles.
