The machine in the photo vends books and magazines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the brainchild of Novel Idea vending, a UK company which has been placing in this space since 2001. Cosmopolitan magazine is one of the magazines being vended through this device at Gatwick Airport. The publishing Director of Cosmopolitan explains why the vending machine works for them:
‘Purchasing a magazine to read on the plane or on holiday is a ritual for many women. By including Cosmopolitan in these vending machines, we are offering an additional innovative distribution method and extending accessibility to our readers and potential new consumers.’
How does the price from the vending machine compare to normal retail pricing?
It does make sense however if they are only at the departure gates they may only get impulse consumers. Others who want a mag for the plane will have already bought one from the shops on the way to the gate.
Niall, From what I can see the prices is massaged to suit. Cosmo for example is discounted to round down. Mark
I have just been reading some more about the machine. It accepts credit card payments via GPRS. You can read a synopsis of the book on the LCD screen and every month they update about 10 titles.
Also just realised the men behind it are Irish so it is now the best invention in the world in my opinion.
WHEN CAN WE GET THESE MACHINES THEY WOULD GO GREAT IN HOSPITALS , UNI’S AND PLACES LIKE THAT
Shaun,
All it would take would be a simple e-mail to the Novel Idea people to discuss distribution rights in Australia.
I agree they would be great….. as long as you had the network of people to keep them restocked and up to date. Once people see them with the same old titles all the time they will stop looking at them.
I am a little confused over this piece of job displacement technology and how you feel it would be good to have in Australia.
It will be phased in eventually no matter, the reason why I feel confused is when they do get distributed in Australia, Possibly ACP may get the rights and they will put them in every shopping centre (maybe 3 or 4 in each centre), Terminal, Train Stations etc etc, I would of thought that this may of disturbed Newsagents, taking potential customers away from one’s shop.
You can obtain more info from me directly, I introduced the magazines to the kiosk’s and they seem to work very well with the consumers

Hi Sue
I am the Australian/NZ distributor of Novel Vending machines and worked with the developers in the UK. We have been in touch with all the major newsagent groups and had no luck with gaining a response really keen to talk to someone regarding potential for newsagents. Robyn

I don’t see much use for this unit here given the availability of magazines already so so many outlets including transit outlets.
Are these machines resistant to vandalism or do they need to be supervised? There certainly are applications for these…
Oh Mark,
Instead of gritting your teeth why don’t do purchase a copy of Business Franchise Magazine and have a good read! We are not about taking business away from Newsagents but in fact we are offering you a solution! Stop living in the past and look at the now ! we are in 2010 welcome to the future!
As little as five years ago, many in the publishing industry, and newsagents in particular, would have laughed off suggestions that magazine vending machines would become a viable competitor for their share of retail trade.
But fast forward to 2010, and with 12 machines in key locations, another 24 due to be installed over the next few weeks, and a further 24 on order, the newsagents have begun to take notice. The forward-thinking ones have recognised that if they buy the machines, they are able to expand their business reach, and retain their share of the market.

with the terminal decline in print media, cant imagine anyone wanting to invest thousands in a magazine vending machine at this point in time. From the moment you set it up, that will be the best you will ever achieve as sales will continue to decline as more and more people access mags etc thru electronic means. These vendng machine are about 10 years too late and have missd the boat. There may be a few (very few) locations that they may work for a while, but to think they will work in a majority of locations is very short sighted
Another take on this could be that with a decline continuing in terms of newsagency mag sales resulting in the distribution model as we know it eventually disappearing altogether, it could also possibly mean ‘The Channel’ could no longer be a viable route for magazine sales.
Given the huge push with many publishers for online subscriptions, and direct phone/mail order subscriptions, it’s not such a remote possibility anymore.
Maybe, just maybe, vending machines could be a viable solution to this issue should such a situation arise.
It would save an awful lot of work and cashflow issues, when potentially one could simply charge machine owners for space allocated either inside our outside stores, plus commission. We would not be responsible for their stocking or maintenance, and provided the outfits owning them were doing the right thing regarding this, I could see my store suddenly looking a whole lot better, and my business would be a little more my own.
Personally, it’s not such a bad idea…
Is there a way to have one placed in a HS setting? Would be looking to have it filled with various novels that are used.
Dont trust Magazine Vending. They dont have ANY machines installed and have taken large amounts of money from people. Google Magazine Vending Scam and see for yourself.
agree with ROB above, *** SCAM ALERT *** this is a whole scam, especially DO NOT even go to the MAGAZINE VENDING LINK above.. and especially DO NOT TRUST the director Mr Cash Storm Seiden. They get investors (often mum and dads) to pay for the machines ( $30k usually) then go into liquidation or do a runner. Mr Cash Storm Seiden is the director of “Magazine Vending” and had contract between Vending Locations Australia ACN 137 083 946 and ACP Magazines Ltd. Advertises online via bsale.com.au, seek and magazinevending.com.au etc and after sounding professional and many phone calls/meetings he convinces people to pay $30k for vending machine where they will get 25% income each mth on sale of magazines. After money is invested, he lies/bluffs/delays and avoids phone calls. . Mr Seiden has a default judgment and ACP magazines Ltd have cancelled their dealings with him effective 14/2/2012. I have all the proof u need! DO NOT BUY INTO THIS SCAM!Check out: http://vendingmachinesaustralia.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/new-business-vending-machines.html?showComment=1329525677675 http://www.scam.com/blog.php?b=9944 See how many others are affected.
Why would you purchase Business Franchise Magazine when you can just look at one on the shelf.
Actually I have looked at this magazine and I would have to say that just because a franchise is mentioned in there dosen’t automatically validate. In fact amongs the good ones there a lot of silly ideas in this magazine. Tread your own path
