Lottery jackpot burnout?

tatts_synd.JPG

Some newsagents have mentioned that sales in the $22 million lottery superdraw / megadraw are soft, citing too many jackpots in recent times. Certainly the $22 million is not as alluring as $30 million. Also, the Saturday winner usually has to share their prize with ten or so others whereas Powerball goes off to one winner.

We’re creating some excitement in our store through our Syndicate wall. This is what we have to do with these ‘scheduled’ superdraws – create syndicates and therefore some excitement. Our view is that it’s a matter of having a broad range of product which connects with the interest in luck among various ethnicities.

Our customers are voting with their wallets. Now all we need is to win!

Interestingly (and despite my feelings to the contrary), our sales for the $22 Million Tattslotto draw have eclipsed Thursday’s $30 Million draw and I think that one of the main reasons for this is the above – there is a perception that Tattslotto is easier to win even if the prize share is lower. Our comparatively high sales of “field” tickets vs “other” for Powerball would also suggest that there is a feeling that it is so hard to win that any assistance in eliminating the need to select the Powerball is welcomed by the punters!

Jim I agree about Powerball and the Field tickets. They are very popular.

We ended the $22 million superdraw on a high – not as high as the $30 million Powerball but as good as recent Tattslotto superdraws. There was a good rush yesterday.

I went back over the last 10 weeks sales and the ratio of Tattslotto to Powerball sales is 5.95 (week just finished), 1.02, 1.42, 1.77, 1.97, 2.66, 2.82, 1.66, 3.5 (can’t remember but probably another Tattslotto superdraw by the look of the sales) and 2.23 – I think it reinforces the thought that Powerball is considered too hard.
I think we also get a lot of “casual” sales on the Saturday which might be more of a country/tourist phenomenon and Powerball probably suffers being closely followed by Tattslotto on Saturday night.
This weeks sales were very high compared to previous superdraws for some reason.
