Gay magazines, the niche challenge

gay_magazines.JPGSome magazine categories are a real challenge to locate and so get pushed from pillar to post. Gay related magazines fall into this category. They are often, unfairly, placed in the adult section. I had a customer ask today – because he could not find them in the adult section. When I showed him our small range he congratulated us by not putting them in the adult area. he has just moved from Sydney and has a story about a fight with his local newsagent when he asked that the gay magazines get moved from being mixed in with Picture, People and Zoo.

It amazes me what some people share when looking for they products they want.

Hey mate, new reader to your blog and finding it very interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes! But this article caught my attention for a similar reason you write about. Being occasionally inclined to visit a nudist venue, i do have some interest in the naturist movement and am offended when the relevant titles are buried in the porn section of the newsstand! It is not porn, and I don’t like being seen as a dirty perv when browsing that end of the newsagent for what is really a health/lifestyle/travel publication. I don’t know your position on those magazines but when they’re placed in amongst the adult section I tend not to buy them, and sometimes think subscribing would be a better option which is not what newsagents would want.

Andy they shouldn’t be in the adult section. I agree with you: health / lifestyle / travel. mark
