The magazine sales decay challenge

decay_cost.JPGAs I blogged a few days ago we did not receive Take 5 stock on Wednesday. While replacement stock arrived late that day, the damage was done as the photo which I took yesterday shows.

We sell around 75% of our Take 5 copies on the on sale day. Even being without stock for two thirds of a day can hurt our figures for the week. If I had accepted what the Network Services call centre operator first advised, I would not have received replacement stock until Friday.

Magazine distributors need to take more attention of the magazine sales decay curve for weeklies in newsagencies. Doing so will help them better understand the high cost of missed deliveries and, hopefully, encourage them to be more proactive at rectifying the situation.

Mark, you are lucky you received any stock at all.
Last month we failed to receive Real Living Magazine on the issue date. Our supply covered several bundles so my first reaction was it had not issued. By 9.00am I logged on to the Network Website to find it had indeed issued. What happened next was unforgivable – no stock available for replacement. Telephone calls and emails brought no result.. “Sorry no stock”
I can partly understand they may not keep stock for extras, but not to have any stock for lost remittances shows very poor management.
No stock for the month = no profit.
Ironically this month we received a flyer saying we would be receiving a Real Living magazine display box because of our high sales volume. Yeah right!!
This brings me on to another matter. Whoever received my stock said nothing. It is hard to believe they would not notice several extra bundles. Their mentality probably said ” I can sell/return more copies and the other agent will have his missing stock replaced”. Wrong…
If you receive a shipment which is not yours, be honest…lift the phone and report it. It could happen to you.

Concersely, I had a non delivery from Gordon and Gotch not long back, when I first reported the loss I was told there was no stock, when I pushed however, not only was there stock but I managed to get it that day! Kudos GG, well done, I should not have needed to push however.
