Loving nudists

tan_magazine.JPGTan magazine has an excellent sell through in our Forest Hill store. We sell between ten and twelve copies of the fourteen we receive each issue. The sales are excellent for a small special-interest indie magazine. It beats some big name monthlies.

What I like is that customers will come to us for Tan because of its special-interest status whereas they can go to a myriad of outlets for these other major monthlies.

We are wondering if we should leverage our success with the Tan and run a promotion. We could do nude day but I think our landlord would have an issue with that. Maybe we will go with a fig leaf display. We want to come up with something to see if we can increase sales further.

as long as you don’t stash TAN among the “adult” section because that puts more people off buying it if they think they are buying p0rn

there are full frontal photos of naked young children in this magazine. Do you think that is appropriate in this day and age to be singing its praises?
There are enough sickos wandering around shopping centres without you guys promoting it

    Mr No Name,

Have you actually looked inside one of those magazines say in the last 10 years? In most instances they shy away from images of children because of these so-called “sickos”.

I have no issues with these type magazines as there’s obviously a market for them as long as the children are left out. I myself don’t stock the mag so i’ve never seen it so don’t know what they do or don’t show.

On a side note Mark, how long does it take for a post to be moderated? I only ask because i posted one in the lotteries section late last night in regards to Intralot’s latest woes and pertinent newspaper articles that would interest all agents yet it hasn’t been given approval to be shown.

Is it just me being censored or is it everyone? It’s funny as you’ve also prided yourself on the fact that this blog isn’t moderated and everyone gets to have their fair say regardless of what their opinions are. Maybe negative Intralot posts are taboo around here now for some reason.

That’s odd, my post above went straight through while the one i was referring to still says now that my comment is awaiting moderation?

Sorry to get off track with this topic, i just wasn’t sure where else i could ask it to get an answer.

    Dean,

The comment you posted last night was placed by Word Press into a moderation queue. I don’t control this.

What I find curious is that you posted about Intralot a few minutes after the Herald Sun loaded their story on their website. I suspect you have more to do with this than you are letting on.

What section would you put it in i feel it has to go into the porn section it has more nudity than some ,you wouldn’t put it into womens or mens interest you wouldn’t put it into the crossword section nor the arts and crafts so where would it go ..i do sell quite a ferw copies of this mag i have it in the adult section and the funny part is that not one person that buys this mag is the slightest bit TANNED they are only buying it for a perve

Shaun, I sell mine in the same area – Adult. It’s with Go Natural and Australian Sun and Health. They seem to be purchased all at once.

I hope your shop is alright after the floods.

Mark, If you’re serious about promoting it further, you should get in contact with Tan and the ANF.

The pro active ANF might be able to work out something with your landlord in regards to the square inch requirement of the fig leaves used on the volenteers that the ANF might in fact supply you.

    Good Luck!

We also do well with this magazine. It is placed in the men’s interest section which includes lad’s mags (penthouse, etc), men’s health mags, and specialty mags (cigar aficionado, etc). This is a rather large section for us since over 80% of our customers are men.

As TAN is a magazine focused on a clothes-free lifestyle, wouldn’t it logically be placed in the Lifestyle section?

I agree Hayden. Naturism is a lifestyle, and naturist magazines such as TAN and Australian Sun & Health belong in the lifestyle section of a newsagent. Putting them with magazines such as Playboy sends totally the wrong message about the lifestyle.
