UK Grazia discounts but protects margins

The issue of Grazia in the UK which came off-sale on March 17 was discounted to one pound.  Newsagent margin was maintained as if sold at the usual cover price.

Maintaining newsagent margin is common in the UK when magazines are discounted by publishers.

This used to happen with Zoo when it first came out. And also Super Food Ideas I think. But then it all stopped and nothing was done about it. Would love to know if supermarkets still maintain the margins on discounted mags.

    Hi Mark

Yes you are right the margin was protected. We sold our entire supply, 5 copies, but there was no extra copies supplied.

There is a lot of this cut pricing going on in the UK magazine market, but I think that it is the supermarkets that gain from this type of promotion.

Certainly not my category of newsagent.

    Steve,

what is your margin? We are on 25%.

For some titles we used to be ‘protected’ when they dropped price but that has changed.

    Hi Mark

We get the same as you, but so far we are being protected on publisher driver price cuts.

How long will that last I wonder?

    Chris,

It still happens with zoo. Every 6 weeks or so I believe.
