Ugh! More diary subscriptions!

subs_diaries.JPGThe photo shows more magazine subscriptions being pushed through diaries associated with the magazines. While I understand that subscriptions are part of the publishing model, I am not happy that they use diaries in newsagencies to take business from us.

News Magazines are the worst culprit at the moment with discounts of up to 58% off Gardening Australia, Inside Out, Country Style and delicious.  What makes them worse than others in-store at the moment is their use of insets in diaries and their blatant pitch. I have seen at least one other diary offering a subscription but without a massive discount and not using an insert.

Diaries from magazine publishers are not provided to newsagents for what I would call a commercial margin. They ride off the back of the magazine supply model. I can make twice as much from diaries I bring in under fairer commercial terms.

So, magazine publishers use magazine relationships to place diaries in newsagencies on terms which are favourable to them. They then use this cheap placement to try and get newsagency customers to buy magazines direct from the publisher.

A smart publisher would work with newsagents on a subscription plan and offer fair compensation for the up-sell effort. We have the technology to offer this today. I know of plenty of newsagents who would be happy to sell subscriptions.  They’d also be happy to offer a discounted putaway service in return for a long term up front commitment.

Using diaries to take business from newsagents lacks foresight on the part of publishers. They should support this valuable channel and not treat it with such disrespect.

Publishers diverting revenue from newsagents risk looking back one day and wondering what happened to the newsagents?  Respect us and we support you.

    Y&G,
Thanks for the info,my mags are a few hours away.
Gardening Australia subscription flyers fell out of all their diaries.
Australian Country Collection diary has its subscription flyers as part of the diary near the back. There must be a production problem as all mine fell out.
I noticed that the Little House on the Prairie partwork has two subscription flyers in each issue, one is loose and one is stapled in the middle pages. There were production issues with all of their copies as well.

I’d note that my key concern is the use of diaries supplied to us for magazine margins (and not commercail diary margins) to promote magazine subscriptions.

I am not that concerned about partworks subsscriptions nor, usually, magazine subscriptions offered in magazines.

I think we all should return the diaries which anyway give little margin compare to normal diaries

This blog is out of frustration.

    CAN SOMEONE HELP?????

We have been stocking the tractor partwork here in Parkes for customers. We have had a customer request binders for the partwork. We have contacted Gordon and Gotch and Bissett and have had NO luck. Is anyone out there having this problem? To us it seems the only way to get a binder is to subscribe direct for the whole partworks. If this is the case why do we promote (heavily) partworks when we cannot deliver???

If it helps any after a horrible experience with http://www.magshop.com.au I would never in my lifetime bothering doing it again. I was enticed with the offer of over $100 worth of beauty products which never turned up and was told ‘ too bad’, I then spent countless emails and phonecalls trying to even get the magazine I subscribed to. My advice – stick to your local newsagency. At least you can take advantage of any freebies on the mags and buy the issues you enjoy. I like nothing better than visiting my newsagency and seeing the latest mags and buying a variety 🙂

Greg I get the binders for any one who wants them ,from bissett they just charge it to our credit card . Most can not believe that they can not get their binders or the goodies from the newsagent. It is time agents stood up to these people.

We tried Bissett and they said ring G&Gotch. So we rang G&Gotch and they said ring Bissett. We have ordered products for customers before from Bissett but have been told they cannot help with our tractor partwork dilema. Cheers Greg

Go back to Bissetts and order them ,Binders. We have taken a sub with bissetts for tanks and when we have the free stuff we will stop it and then order from g/g .Have told them what is going to happen when the free goods have been received ,they seem to be happy With that.Tractors come from G/G.Push your order up and back order. G/G always gets the job done.We have enough of the tractor plus our back orders are comeing to us ok.When you have a new part work place an order for the numbers you want ,some times I get it ok but other time I fail, but you must place an order do not hang back.We have been doing partwoks for years and love them Bissetts + G/G will need to do more with the free goods so they are at your newsagents.I beleive they are not getting near the sales out of agents because of the agent are being turned off by their bull shit and if it was my goods being so under sold I would not be happy
