Our team at Forest Hill has setup a small display promoting Australia Day at the aisle end in our card department which is nearest our main newspaper stand – i.e. great traffic location. (Click on the photo to see a larger version.) We will add magazines to the display which feature Australia Day on the cover as well as newspapers on the day. I have seen plenty newsagents do a great job promoting and connecting with Australia Day – it is part of a good community connection.

We too have embrassed the Australia Day theme and have had our display going since Boxing day… We found that we sold a considerable amount of Australia ‘stuff’ for New Years… We have found that the Green and Gold & Australia Mexican Hats, Car Flags, Large Flags, Hand Flags, Tattoos and face paint all sell well at huge margins. To date we would have sold 300 mexican hats… luckily we overorderd as you can only get the green and gold ones now…
Now slightly off topic… QLD Newspapers have announced another Australia Day give away next week… Free Hat with the Sunday Mail coupon. If this is anything like last years it will be another debarcle where our staff are abused, called un-Australian for not having enough stock… We sell 1,000 papers on a Sunday (and deliver 500) and when they have these things over 1,200 (they all come out of the woodwork for somthing free) last year we got 250 of the flags and they were gone by 7.00am… Lets see if they improve their game, but we are not expecting it… have already faxed through requesting 1,000 for the 1,500 – 1,700 papers so lets see how many we get.
