Were schools offered newspapers for election day?

I have heard from a couple of newsagents that nearby schools used as polling places for the election wereoffered newspapers for sale on the day by a publisher with the school to make $1.00 per newspaper sold. In the cases I have been told about, the newsagent was not part of the conversation.

I’d be curious if anyone else heard about this promotion.

    Hi Mark,

We did what we have done for past elections and worked with the PNC at the school.

We provided them with Newspapers for the day and give them 12.5%.

What we have found is that our counter sales are not impacted (even up)and that we actually sell more at the school than we do through the shop. An additional $500 in commission for us is nothing to be sneazed at…

    Cheers

Yes Mark this happened at one of our local schools however, Fairfax has their own contractor who supplies that particular distribution so we didn’t have a case to argue. We did however, position our own paperboy outside the same school selling Nationwide papers. We positioned our other paperboys/girls at several other schools in our area too. Overall, we were surprised by the little number of papers sold. Shop sales also weren’t as largely increased as we, and the publishers anticipated (given the extra quantities they supplied us with that weekend).

I had to give 300 copies of the Daily Telegraph to one local school however I have 6 schools in my area, all bar one were polling places and I refused to deliver papers to the others because of the close proximity to our shop and my subagents. Overall the promotion was not a bad idea, sales were up at all subagents and my shop and I received 12.5% plus a delivery fee, I’m happy with that.

Things must have changed, but I thought is was illegal to retail at polling booths.

the principal at the school 1 block away from my store said she recived a fax from fairfax on this.
i was very glad to hear she was thinking of our business when she declined the offer.
this was the 1st election i have been in the business for, come march when the nsw state election is on, i will work with the p&c to make them a 12.5% subagent for the day with both papers.
i dont have a rep or point of contact at fairfax to get an answer without a reasonable amount of fuss/time, but i am very interested to find out how this can be done in our teritory?
my store is in rural nsw
