The centres in which my stores are located are usually closed New Years Day. This year, a couple are open for optional trading. I haven’t yet made a decision about whether to open and would be interested in feedback from others.

Yes, we will be open
in a centre of
some 55 shops,
had a big week so
far
only for a few hours . since there is no sat lotto no woolies open and nothing else in the center , i will just sell a few papers and go back to bed i think .
Our biggest concern was no Lotto. Would normally open as a courtesy to sell a few papers but Woolies is open so we are taking the day off……2nd in a week…..WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!
As we have done over the last two days, we will be open the normal Sat hours and take the money from all the shops that are not open.
People have money to spend and if you are not open they will spend it somewhere else. In our area we have had a hard 18 months but shop owners cannot complain about no sales if they have had the last 4 days off, we only took christmas day off and have made good money while everyone else stayed at home, again people have money to spend and now have time off to spend it, so if you are not open then don’t complain about bad trade.
I was told during my sport days that those that are successful do what the other side is not willing to do.
Happy new year.
I agree with Luke that you open to keep your customers coming in regulary. The only downside is that with the $31m on the night before we will get a lot of people coming in on Sat. wanting a ticket. We informed our regular customers but even some of them are confused as to the change in draw dates so we are trying to get them buy tickets now, but habits are hard to change.
luke do you take enough to cover wages on those days?
our center close for new year too. i think our centre has the most holiday out of all shopping malls. i would rather close than open and wish no more sunday trade .
$$ is not everything , family comes first.
Not going to open checking tickets staff on double time
Not opening – family time much more important
we are closed, but I notice the banks have had the 4 days off or should I say their computers have, no credit for EFTPOS or ATM yet.
We’ll be closed all day. Can’t see there’s any point being open with no Lotto on so will only being selling papers basically. We opened Xmas day for 5 hours as a courtesy to customers to get their lotto on for the ones that didn’t do it earlier plus we opened all day for the last 2 days when every other Tatts/newsagency in our area (besides shopping centres) was shut by early morning so i think we’ve earned a day off!
As mentioned money isn’t everything, especially considering we’d be very lucky to cover our overheads even if we did open. We’re only in a shopping strip of 12 shops so i can hardly see a massive rush of people banging down our door to be served.
We’re open (6am – 6pm) but we’re a supermarket as well. People may break down our doors if we closed for more than 1 day a year!
Here in SA our shopping days are very confused and yesterday (Tue) we had to pay double time and a half for staff. I worked and paid one senior and one junior because we were supposed to get our stock delivered as well – never happened so I paid wages for nothing as I could have handled the shop by myself with no other jobs to do.
However, we are traders, people, so we should be open to trade
We normally close on New Years Day but will open this year, 9am-3pmunless its too busy to close which has happened every time we’ve planned an early close this Christmas season. The area is growing and the centre seems busier, opening is an opportunity to win over customers who may normally shop else where whether that be out of town or at our local competition. We’ll open Australia day too this year just for holiday trading hours. Holidays in February will will be well earned.
Yes June we are indded traders but we aren’t robots as well. Even traders need a day off every now and again on a public holiday and while i know some others might work longer, i think our 70+ hours we work a week has earned one.
It’s your prerogative if you want to open or not but i for one will be looking forward to my first full 2 days off in nearly 10 years.
Just wondering how many newsagents don’t get a short break 4-7 days, once aor twice a year?
Brendan, we used to have a few days off but with having to cut back on staff over the last few years we only get Christmas day and Good Friday off.
We only close on christmas day. All other public holidays are 9am-12pm, and we still get verbally abused for that.
Andy, yes we more than cover wages, our store has so much more to offer then just lotto and newspapers, we offer books, dvd’s/cd’s mags, gifts and like I stated before people have money to spend.
I am not here to tell everyone else to open but you cannot whinge about bad trade and tuff times but then close the doors and take time off. If you can afford it, then close if not keep trading.
We will break even on last yr which I think is good considering the yr we have had here, but we have worked harder then the other retailers here also.
Definately open New Years Day 6am-8pm. Its my last opening before i take a break with the family for a couple of weeks. There has to be some balance.
Christmas Day was my only day off this year and the most anticipated sleep in of my entire life. Doh!!
Damn body clock – wide awake at 3.50am!!
The comments here reflect, in part, the differences between shopping centre and high street businesses. In one of our centres of 200+ stores, around a third of stores will be open. History has shown that on such days, opening is loss making.
Good point there Mark. Depending on location of your shopping centre or street business some will worthwhile opening and some just won’t be. As mentioned earlier we’re on a shopping strip with 12 shops where every one of them will be closed except the bakery so there’s no way we’ll cover costs by trading on Saturday.
We’ve opened pretty much every other new years day (for at least half day in the past) but that was at least when there was a Tatts draw on any given day it fell and we know from experience we we’re even lucky to break even then so we sure as hell wouldn’t on Saturday.
We arent opening more from a security point of view.We would have been the only ones open in the centre and its not worth the risk.
Open. Should be worthwhile. We will be a bit bleary-eyed, tho.
