Heavy last day of the month for newsagents

The last Wednesday of the month is usually the heavy supply day as magazine publishers and distributors make the most grabbing newsagent cash.  Yesterday, the last Monday of the month, was extraordinary.  In a couple of my stores, the supply load was close to double a usual Monday.

While distributors and publishers will have their excuses, newsagents will not believe them.  As the ones having our cash sucked dry, it is reasonable that we challenge some of the more cynical supply decisions which we see at the end of the month.

maybe we should all just pay until their last day for monthly returns. anything they send after they stop returns will be paid next month.

they stop us from getting credit….we stop them from getting paid. but of course this is just a silly dream of mine.

why do they even have a cut-off day for returns anyway? anyone know their official reason for having a cut off day?

All we do is complain, but do nothing about the real problems. Why not try something different – get together – get the association to consult will all parties – if no solution is found – seek legal recourse – the ball is in our court.

John the collection approach has failed for years because of the lack of engagement by newsagents with associations on matters such as this. I think you will see smaller more commercial alliances form to address these matters.

    Mark,
You are right when you say it failed because of the lack of engagement by newsagents. It is our singular lack of almost everything that makes it easy for our suppliers to do what they want. There are very few newsagents prepared to get off their butt and really try to do something for the betterment of all newsagents.

john, there was a push around five years ago so I and a friend and former fellow ANF Director Tom carter formed United Newsagents of Australia. For $99 a year newsagents could join an association with the sole focuses of policy and lobbying.

Newsagents said they loved the idea but did not join.

as I said, I think different commercial groupings will address this.

For the record guys. Our company United media group for the past six years has always distributed its magazines in the first week of the month to help newsagents with cash flow. It all helps

Dirk, if you could let newsagents know which mags are yours then I’m sure we will help your product along because you have our interests at heart. We need more publishers to do this for us but please remember that newsagents only deal with 2 main distribution companies and often don’t know the publisher for a mag.

    Off topic, sorry.
Can anyone distinguish the current issue’s cover of BHG, from last month’s?
    Someone just stopped trying.
