The personal magazine recommendation

Further to my post on the weekend about suggesting titles those browsing a specific title may be interested in, here is an example of more personal magazine promotion by our team.  In this example, Tessa explains why she recommends the UK Hello magazine.

We are not directing the magazines to be promoted or choosing the words they are to use.  I think it’s important that team members giving a recommendation have the freedom to make this a genuine recommendation.

I like this idea because of the personal nature it.  I also like that it shows that we engage with magazines ourselves.  You’d never see this in a supermarket.

It’s a good idea borrowed from the bookshops Mark. ! Is one of your staff members an ex A&R or Mary Ryans employee as they’ve been doing it with books for years ?

Now that you’ve done it with a magazine it seems like a pretty obvious cross over thats never been done before. Funny how the obvious isn’t always so obvious !

Paul, no, no A&R connection. While the team members may have leveraged something they had seen elsewhere, it was not a deliberate plan to copy.

Nothing at all wrong with borrowing the idea.

Whats struck me is how often I’d seen it done (I’m a bit of a bookstore tragic when I have the time) but hadn’t even thought to cross it over into the newsagency. That sort of thinking outside the square and borrowing ideas from other sources is to be commended.

Its actually made me think of what other ideas I’ve seen in other businesses that I could apply to my business that I hadn’t even considered. Marks OP has really got me thinking a bit about this today while I’ve been going about my work.
