Promoting weekly magazines in the run up to Christmas

We are making the most of the opportunities with weekly magazines this wee in the run up Christmas.  Our approach is somewhat counter-intuitive. We only have these titles in this one location in-store.  Yes, no counter display, no impulse unit display.  Indeed, we have been doing this since our magazine relay in September.  Sales of weeklies are up 13% on a year on year basis.

So, by saying that we are making the most of Christmas opportunities, we are ensuring that all products in-store are segmented by department in clearly defined and easy to shop locations – like with this display of weeklies.  I think that this approach gets people shopping the shop.  Certainly our numbers indicate that something is working for us.  A 13% increase in weeklies sold is excellent when you consider that the average is a 5% decline for the newsagency channel.

So far this month, we are tracking an uncross of 54% more magazines sold than for the same period last year … off a healthy base.  We are very proud of this as it means we are banking solid results from our obsession with magazines.

I was prompted to write this blog post by a newsagent who was swing that this is the week for us to forget the traditional newsagency lines as we will be too busy with christmas.  I disagree.  This is the week for our core newsagency offer to be right as it’s the week we could provide an experience that brings first time visitors back.

It would be great to have such weeklys to even sell , wd cut back tv week cut back people mag cut back . i have no wd left no tv week left and it is only tuesday . The busiest week of the year and they want to stuff around making adjustments now . oh but never mind i have enough 4wd drive mags fishing mags and arts and craft magazines to last me a life time ,these all must have missed the cut backs and went on the increase list because they do not sell .

Oh well hopefully that is the last winge of the year ,bring on 2012

Guys get in touch with Gotch and network now, there should be more stock available. Alternatively, let the publishers know.

Okay. Maybe a reminder to both companies that they need to look at supply. I’d call then Shaun, especially Network as they are better than Gotch at dealing with this stuff on the phone.

Where to put mens magz such as GQ, Maxim eg?
We have just had a large change around of magz to meet customers needs. The one lot of titles that we are not sure where they belong is the mens such as GQ, Maxim and FHM. At the moment they are between the ‘girlie magz’ and the ‘shooting magz’. Which I dont feel is a great spot. Where do you put these magz??

    Suggestions?

We have created an area next to sports. Here we put Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, GQ, Maxim, FHM and a range of sports titles flowing through to UFC, cricket, football, rugby and AFL. This section has cars on one side and other sports: golf, skiing, fishing etc on the other side.

    I hope this helps.

Kenzie, I put GQ and GQ Australia in with the womens fashions along with Mens Style too, and they sell from there.
The GQ’s and Maxim all go near cars/motorbikes also, but rarely sell from there. FHM does better near motoring also
