Are you selling Fifty Shades of Grey?

Fifty Shades of Grey is the bestselling book ever in Britain. Other books in the series, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are also bestsellers, selling millions of copies.

I’d be curious to know whether any newsagents have been selling the books or any products that leverage interest in the books.

Massive trends like this are ideal for newsagents. Look at our Harry Potter related products, Twilight products and other wonderful movie and book franchises. we are made for leveraging entertainment franchises – yes, even he raunchy subject matter of the Fifty Shades series.

I would be careful now as it is so cheap in the majors it could turn out to be a burden unless you can sell it for under $10 and have no competition around.

Random House have some great newsagent deals with popular titles if you are able to obtain an acount with them.
The same goes for ABC books.
I’ve noticed Network also doing some high margin firm sale deals in their weekly e-coms. Murdoch/Hinkler etc Some of the prices there & recommended RRP’s are better than the big chains

We have bought them from Bookpower in adelaide. We are right in front of a Kmart and had great success with these titles and many of their other book related products.

A reason I blogged about this is the opportunities beyond the books.

Have sold quite a few here. Retailing at $19.95. I certainly generates some conversation!

We bought approx 30 copies of each of the three titles from Big-W at $9.98 , 3 months ago. Sold at $17.95. Used them in a window display with Darrell Lea (remember them), chocolates and wine bottles. Tagged – “what better way to unwind than wine, chocolates and a good read..” The result was 30% of our book sales were with chocolates! The window display was also to reinforce the fact that yes our newsagency can be up with the latest. Book retail price wasn’t an issue.

Hmm, Mark – I seem to recall being in your shop and noticing you selling a pole dancing pole. That’s related?!

Maybe I should co-locate them next to Picture and People. You know, buy one for him and one for her 😉

I don’t think that there was a dancing pole in the Red Room.

These books are going dirt cheap and like everything else are sold at heavy discount to the RRP. I noticed them about a month ago. Big W & Kmart was selling them for about $10 each, QBD sold them at $12.99 or 3 for $30. Just last week Coles is was selling 3 for $25. I have 3 of these competitors in my centre so I lean towards the caution side.

I guess a question Sam is whether we could sell other products to this marketplace … whether we are game.

Mark, maybe you can merge the Tower newsagency POS software with the Adult version?

Wow…after seeing this, I went to Big W to buy some copies.
For $19.98 you could buy all 3 plus the tie from the cover of the first issue.
    Talk about selling cheap.

we picked up about 30 copies of each from big w for about $10 each, sold them easily for $22.95 each. we deal thru the major book dist as we are a bookstore as well, but often with these very popular books we get them cheaper from the major chains.
