In print edition of The Australian today is a code providing access to a digital copy of John Howard’s autobiography Lazarus Rising. It’s a good given, well targeted. Smart, too, to connect readers with the digital platform.
I was surprised to see that readers at the website need to subscribe to get the code – given that free copies of the newspaper are so widely available.
This is the second week of this offer actually – a different book every day. I think it runs to the end of this month.

Why stock the Australian?
Seriously, we stopped stocking it after they wrote a demeaning article about newsagents last year. The article was false, and painted newsagents in a very bad light.
This newspaper does not respect newsagents, so why stock the product?

Thanks Mark for the reminder, I forgot to download it this morning.

Mark – It’s not my understanding that you need to subscribe in order to get the free e-book each day. If you go to The Australian website and click on the links, THAT takes you to a page requiring subscriptions. But, if you follow the instructions published inside the newspaper, then you don’t. My husband couldn’t figure it out yesterday when he tried to download John Howard’s free e-book, but I had success. It’s just a matter of reading the precise instructions and doing exactly what they say.

Yes, that’s what I said.

Thursday today and we were short supplied the newspaper (again).
I felt a paradigm shift in my attitude and
decided that it didn’t matter any more.???
After 34 years of living, breathing, working, throwing, packing newspapers I
have come to the realisation that they DO NOT MATTER ANYMORE. (ESPECIALLY AT
12.5% AS I AM NO LONGER A DISTRIBUTION AGENT)
I am feeling quite liberated.

Tend to agree with you June. We make about $12.00 per day from papers. I’d rather sell 3 or 4 more cards than the 100 papers required to make this pittance.

I see newspapers as a customer service for now. And I am chasing more and more foreign newspapers.
