Famous cover price drop should arrest sales decline

Pacific Magazines has responded to the 14.4% decline in sales of Famous with a cut in the cover price from $4.20 to $3.95.

They are supporting the new price point with counter display units in newsagencies. I’m using this in each of my stores this week to promote the price drop and to chase impulse purchases.

Being above $4.00 was always going to be a challenge in a market where a weekly magazine is more of a discretionary purchase today than a few years ago. The newsagency sales data I see shows that weekly magazines are the items most often purchased with a discount voucher or a free magazine voucher.

    Mark,
Famous -0h what a shambles last seven editions:
    Supply Return
    42 18
    42 12
    42 15
    42 16
    42 15
34 04 Fair enough reduction in supply

    Price reduction ………

    15 Copies supplied …

Why do we bother with them (the distributors) Lots of good people in our retail industry putting up with this allocation.

What’s worst is that even when you know you are short allocated (via XIT) you can’t fix the problem early but must wait until the on sale date.

Thought you should know McDonalds is giving away FREE “Famous” or “New Idea” with any McCafe Purchase. I saw the promo and the Free Mags on the Mc Cafe counter as I walked into a Maccas today. The promo says Free New Idea but I only saw “Famous”. The Issue is last week’s.

got a call from the local MD about magazine delivery. Had no idea what they were talking about. Would’ve been nice if they came from us (like the free paper promos) . But long term erosion of value still exists.

Good point Clive, I’m amazed that people eat so much of that crap. Don’t start me on KFC!
Seriously though they have done No Idea giveaways at the Gloria Jeans located next to my newsagency. What an insult.
