Magazine trash

magszinedamageCheck out how one storage box of magazines looked this morning in one of my newsagencies. Plenty of stock un-merchantable. I’ve heard from other newsagents recently of similar damage to magazine stock delivered. Very frustrating for us and disheartening for publishers.

I sent a similar picture to GG today, following on from past complaints on the same subject. Nothing happens.
When a magazine distributor contracts the distribution to a third party, who themselves contract it on to a fourth party, who couldn’t give a toss, this is the result.

Wow, that’s pretty bad. Guess we are lucky to have a driver who take pride in his work.
That magazine Tea Glorious Tea looks interesting, I haven’t seen it before.

This sort of treatment is par for the course for us – in the last 3 or 4 years I could count on one hand the number of times all of our bundles have arrived intact. I have actually seen drivers throw bundles from the back of the truck rather than walk 5 metres to place them with the rest not even picking up the loose magazines when bundles fly apart.
On reporting this treatment to G&G or NDC (in particular) the response is “we will talk to the freight company”.
I don’t think the customer service people realise that in the country, freight can change hands 3 or 4 times before it gets to the customer.
As for the idiots in the warehouse, how they can expect bundles to travel safely the way they are strapped beggars belief!

This sort of treatment never occurred when CMD had a contract to deliver mags and given the pristine state IPS arrives in (carried by CMD) they obviously respect the product and the customers.

Finally, if you have the misfortune to report full bundles or bulks gone missing, NDC go on a witch hunt inevitably landing the blame back at the newsagency for “lack of security”.

Magazine distribution and delivery is a pathetic joke at the moment and the sooner publishers realise that they (like newsagents) are being treated as fools by G&G and NDC and move to IPS, the better off this industry will be!
