PM on ABC Radio tonight had an excellent interview with a security expert about concerns over the paywave (paypass) technology currently in use. It’s well worth a listener read. Click here.

So far I’ve only had about three customers wave their card at my (non-wave) terminal and get taken aback that we don’t yet have paywave. I smile and explain that they are out in the country now, it will be a while till we catch up. General chat among our regulars seems to be that they are not keen on paywave AT ALL, it seems to just be one step too far given the security issues.

We have half our customers expecting it to be available and the other half refuse to use it even if they have an enabled card. We have 1 of 2 machines paye wave capable as it is taking off, from our side of the counter it is fast and keeps customers moving when we are busy. From a personal point of view it is open to fraud that no matter what the banks say their customers will ultimately cover one way or the other.

We don’t do it because of the fees. Standard eftpos through Suncorp is 5c a transaction yet if the customer uses paywave we get charged at the credit card rate. We don’t use it and it has not even been a point of issue.

Paywave is fast and 70% love it. The more they use it the more they like it. I suggest that we should not take too much notice of the naysayers amongst the customers. Many of them will eventually become believers.
