Newsagent pitching $1 magazines

IMG_0785I can’t think of any reason to have this dump bin placed at the entrance to the newsagency. It looks like trash, competes with the premium product inside and disrespects the broader channel. When publishers see this they question the value of dealing with newsagents.

There’s quite a few Newsagents though too Mark who would be questioning the value of dealing with alot of the publishers !

It perplexes me that Gotch don’t include a “Newsagents are reminded…” note with one of our shipments.

I went to a town 30 minutes drive away and both had $1 magazines displayed out the front. One was nicely presented whilst the other was very scrappy. This makes me think it is common practise. It affects the whole industry as it devalues a product we all stock. I emailed Gotch and they told me that the newsagent is allowed to sell discounted titles if they have gone past their return date and have not been credited for return. My guess is that these magazines have all been “returned” and are now being sold. GG didn’t seem interested in chasing it up.

I think a much more practical and supportive use of out of date mags would be by donation to local Doctor and Hospital waiting rooms with your business sticker on the back cover.
Maybe even the local caravan park or motel.

Chris I think it is a publisher issue as they are the once affected. Gotch is not impacted from where I sit and they are not paid to police this.

I reckon we ought to call out the newsagents as they are hurting us.

    Lance I love your ideas.

time to time i have customers out of nowhere asking if we sell $1 mags like other newsagents did. Maybe good business for those shortsighted newsagents huh!
