Herald Sun appears more interested in chasing a politician who is on 3 months mental health leave than real news

I don’t care what anyone else things. This story in the Herald Sun about Victorian politician Lisa Neville is disgusting. But it’s on brand for the Murdoch press. Gutter stuff. Ms Neville is on mental health leave. The Murdoch family demands privacy for its own matters, especially health matters, and, then, this …

Your personal point of view is interesting – I guess the readers will decide for themselves.

This is a mental health issue, as the editor of the rag well knows.

Graeme in my view this about the blatantly politicized one side reporting by News Corp in Australia. Mark is right.

Why haven’t we seen similar reporting about Liberal figures in Canberra or elsewhere. I also now wait with great interest to see what is eventually reported about Dan Andrews recent fall. Could Drunken Debauchery be inferred by News. Please no disrespect to Dan Andrews intended.

Two things I have read recently read on what I consider to be truthful respectful and verifiable correct reporting come to mind on this issue.

One. Ross Garnaut’s Book, “Reset” and specifically Chapter One “The Tree of Knowledge” or in this case as I saw it knowledge denial so that alternate facts are accepted and as seen as correct and therefore acceptable over real facts according to one’s political aim.

Two. Today 13 03 2021 SMH News Review Page 22 “It’s time to burst our own bubbles” by Scott Ryan. Part of this discussion covers pamphlets (early printed Newspaper 1700s) through to today’s social media. This is in particular is extremely interesting and applicable read cover to the issue brought up by Mark.

The greater the denial of Knowledge the more responsive we will be to the extremism we are seeing politics today particularly on the right. Look and Trumpism which is a complete denial of inconvenient facts and knowledge. It is I believe called Populism. This can also explain the madness of Brexit and now appears in France with Marie Le Pen. It does exist in Australia and Scotty et all are doing their best to benefit from it if only they can successfully keep it within the tent.

I did not disagree with Mark’s point of view read the blog You are jumping at shadows and then turning it into some form a political debate.
Quite amazing -who would of thunk such a thing-
i don’t find you point anything but bisased -who cares
the reader decides -personally I don’t read shit or peoples opinions on politics -none of them are worth wasting my time on. History has proved this.

    Graeme,

This photo and story in the Herald Sun was not written and published as news to show how this person is getting better or recovering. Rather, it was intended to deliberately denigrate her and the Government where she is a minister in attempt to show that Government and her in a bad light and their alleged abuse of the system. That to me is propaganda and not news and was done purely for political purposes.

I can see why mark puts these sort of story’s up for public comment as how else can this sort story or propaganda be discouraged or even dare I say it stopped.

i don’t read that sort of crap as I said and if most didn’t the paper would fail for they were the minority.
    End of story. that’s retail.
If you want censorship then be careful of what you get. Be censorship is don’t read it don’t buy it.

    Peter,

The Denial of Knowledge is not just extremism. It is in all mainstream politics.

The centers of political and public administration are only interested in their own re-election, the gravy train must continue. No matter the majority outside these centers see no benefit in the model the few benefit from.

The EEC knew Brexit was likely to vote out, but failed to respond. The UK establishment were aghast at the leave vote. But in 3 subsequent elections the majority to leave increased. It wasn’t Brexit madness by voters. It was Brexit madness by the political classes, their Denial of knowledge.

This mainstream “denial of knowledge” is very evident in Australia politics. Politicians are basking with their “didn’t we do well with handling covid” halo. What they don’t want to talk about are the big issues that covid has conveniently kept off the front pages :

    – housing – unattainable for over a 3rd of the nation
    – aged care – a system not fit for purpose
    – wages – systemic rorting of minimum wage payments by employers and job seeker payments below poverty level living

At some point Denial of Knowledge will have its consequences in Australia also. Don’t blame the extremists or the voters.

Denial can closely be related to your age. We are living through a time of rapid social change. Gender equality, mental health, the rights of minorities, a reappraisal of history, climate change and many more issues. It’s challenging as you get older, to process all this change. However when you look at it from the prism of past change that has taken place, it makes it easier. Many things we take for granted today as normal inclusions in our society were once frowned upon or outright banned.

Peter I don’t think age has anything to do with one’s capacity to lean into and embrace change.

More broadly, we are in a period of a more shouty / pouty news media than ever. Here in Australia we feel it more because of the concentration of ownership.

But, back on topic, this story by the Murdoch press is gutter trash, and on brand for them.

History generally shows that younger people or those that directly benefit the most embrace change more easily. It’s easier to keep doing and believing in what you’ve always done or believed.

I’m not here for a fight Peter. I’ve not read or lived that history. There are plenty of public figures who embraced change late in life. I can think of plenty in our channel who embrace change today, late in life.

It doesn’t matter who embraces it when.

What matters to me, in this thread, is what the Murdoch press did in this reporting.

I was just making a comment, didn’t even mention you and certainly wasn’t looking for a fight. There are exceptions, but generally the young are better than the old at embracing change. I didn’t think that was a such a revolutionary concept.

    It’s not about me.

I guess it does not make sense to even comment about age on this topic of gutter reporting.

Exactly, in this instance, it wasn’t about you at all. But you interpreted it that way, when I was actually replying to the notion of denial in the previous post.

Whatever Peter. I didn’t though. I challenged your generalisation, still do. I don’t think it’s about age.

Now, on the Murdoch press, they are in the gutter because they think it makes them money.

Fine, you’re entitled to your opinion.
But so am I and so are others. However, it seems you are allowed to put your opinions up, but when others do, they are “looking for a fight”.
