I saw a display of these Father’s Day themed cupcakes at my local cake shop on Sunday. In the time I was there, six of the ten customers bought one or more of the cupcakes along with what they came to buy. What a perfect up-sell. One of the team told me that they do this for other holidays and seasons in the year.
Beyond the cupcake itself, which was delicious, there are several levels on which this works. It is an easy basket build; the margin is good; it shows the shop as local and connected; and, feels good.
We newsagents need to find our own cupcakes – things which connect with seasons and events, are an easy basket build, have good margin, shows us as conncted and feels good.
While finding our own cupcakes is a challenge, it is a worthwhile goal.

We came across some cheap good quality sunglasses and watches through a wholesaler going broke (180,000 units). Last week we placed these in dump bins next to the our fathers day card display.
Not being a large newsagency we were initially sceptical of how these would sell. However, with a cost of $3 for polarised (RRP $29.95) and $2 for standard sunglasses (RRP $15.95) and $5 for digital watches which are waterproof to 30 & 50 meters (RRP $29.95) we did not think we could go wrong so we purchased 500 sunglasses and 100 watches.
We retailed the polarised sunglasses for $9.95, the standard ones for $5.95 and the watches for $9.95. The end result for the week was that we sold over 400 pairs of sunglasses and about 80 watches.
Not a bad way to tripple and double your money in a short period… With summer comming on I think we will purchase additional sunglasses and retail on stands at below those marketed in Service Stations et al and then do another major run on both at xmas.
