The NSW state government announced this morning that Tattersalls was the winning binner to operate NSW Lotteries. The government’s announcement specifically mentions newsagents:
Mr Roozendaal said the Government appreciated input from stakeholders, including newsagent associations and employee representatives, who provided valuable assistance during the transaction process.
The Government has worked hard with these key stakeholders to strike a balance between ensuring appropriate protection for newsagents and employees, and achieving the Government’s transaction objectives and a great outcome for NSW.
I see this as a good move, offering a single operator in most states. The opportunities for cross border offers are especially good.
What Tatts is going to do with current agents network in NSW? Asing our Victoria peers, are you treated well over there by this big fellow?

Tatts taking over is certainly not a worst case scenario, we now have to wait and see what changes are made. I understand that Tatts commissions to agents are higher than NSW Lotteries, but to balance that we will be asked to pay for POS materials and posters, and we will also have to pay for Scratchies up front rather than on consignment

i am considering buying a newsagency but an now concerned after reading that in another 5 years newsagents may not be the only people who can sell lotteries, does anyone think that tattersalls would allow supermarkets etc to sell lottery tickets? do you think that a newsagency will still be a profitable business in the next 10 years? i am now debating on this business move, hope some people can give their opinions on this thanks…

Shenae,
While I can’t speak for Tattersalls, I would be surprised if they ditched a cost effective network. The key to the future of lotteries in newsagencies in any state is the extent to which we engage and grow the business.

How did Intralot miss out? Obviously the N.S.W. government is smarter than the Victorians.

Fred – If you are correct, then the Victorian government must be VERY VERY dumb.

Shenae,
Tatts own lotteries in Vic and Qld and have never attempted to sell their products through supermarkets before. We can take comfort through that although I guess time will tell.

Don’t wreck your brains trying to work out which one of the two is dumber, it’s a photo finish for that race!

Shenae, I’ve written plenty about this. Click on the media disruption link to the right.
The extent to which the iPad disrupts our businesses will depend on what we do in the next 18 months.

NSW Agents- Anyone else having trouble getting supplies of scratchies since the Tatts takeover?
They have no $5.00 Win for life scratchies and nothing in the pipeline for the next month.
There is plenty of $3.00 Made for Life but not much else.

My ex-NSW Lotteries rep, now Tatts, led me to believe that there will never again be Scratchies Promos under Tatts as Tatts don’t beleive they help sales.
Tatts would know, wouldn’t they?

Tatts must read this blog.
The NSW Lotteries website now says we will have $5.00 Win for Life scratchies between 8 and 15 September. No mention of it yesterday .
