Beware of this mobile phone recharge scam

I heard from a newsagent yesterday about this scam.

Someone rings indicating that there is an e-pay issue re a $100 Optus (or any telco) recharge unpaid but issued and now used that they will have to charge to your account. They say that if you print another voucher and read out the numbers they can use that one to cancel our bill.

This is a scam.  Never print a voucher and give the number over the phone.

You will start hearing about a lot of these scams as we get busier into xmas. They rely on us getting tired and flustered and not being on top of things.
In our shop we are already seeing people trying to get change from a $50 even when they only gave the staff $20, or saying we did not give them their scatchies. Lucky for us we have our security system behind the counter on a big screen and we can show them the money they handed over or were they put the scratchies, it tends to slow the scammers down if they see themselves getting caught out, it also assures the staff they have done nothing wrong.

Keep an eye out as these grubs prey on us over the so called festive season.

A short while back I was in the checkout queue at a local Coles supermarket and witnessed a customer disputing with the checkout operator about whether she had given the her $50 cash out when she paid via eftpos……the customer was very caught out not realising that the store had just implemented new security video above each checkout. Security came down & told the woman the $50 was in the back part of her purse. Nice try.

We used to get the ‘but I gave you a $50’ complaint all the time until the cameras went in, nothing for months and months now.
