Talking about the future of quality newspapers

LaTrobe University in Melbourne yesterday hosted a discussion on the future of quality newspapers. Included in the panel were Eric Beecher, Chairman of the company which owns Crikey, Paul range, Editor of The Age, Prof. Robert Manne and Dr. Mary Debrett.  Click here to see some tweets posted during the event. While I can’t find a video of the event to share with newsagents, I figured it would be worth at least sharing details of the event.

Yep, Jim. We all know how good the quality of right-wing media ownership is, don’t we?

    Jim,

I think what you perceive to be left wing many would see actually see as centre/moderate. Just because an idea sits to the left of right wing ideaology does not make it “left wing”.

But regardless, you can’t negate the truth of an idea by ‘playing the man’. Argumentum ad hominem.

Jim…Jarryd…..left wing, right wing? It all depends where your own political viewpoint sits. You each appear to be at opposite ends of the spectrum

    ted,

Yes and no. There are some political ideologies that are part of the content that define each side of politics. There are other viewpoints that don’t traditionally sit with either side and could certainly be described as relative.

The reverse of my argument is also true (i just didn’t write that because it was not relevant to the position taken by Jim).

It’s not a secret that I see left-leaning political ideology as the more logical of the two opposing political ‘movements’ (if that is the right word to describe left and right). But that is not to say I discount valid points or reasoned conclusions made by those on the right. Nor would I blindly agree with any positions taken by someone from the left.

All arguments should be analysed on their merit, not on who is making the argument.
