What are your AFL footy card sales like?

Is it just me or are others experiencing a downturn in AFL card sales this year?  Our sales of the regular cards as well as the newspaper cards are down. The rest of the newsagency is experiencing double digit growth. So, I am wondering if footy cards are on the decline…

Our NRL card sales are down on last year and AFL is up (from an exceptionally low base). The rest of the categories in the newsagency are experiencing solid growth.

Can’t keep up here in Albury ! Rushing out the door. Some buying full boxes. Great time of year as we get to give a few away…much to the delight of some of the little blokes and ladies.

This year I did not stock NRL cards there turnover last year was so slow.
I did note though and again this year how many shops have a box on there counter in our centre.
On a side note and a following that thought we also removed our Drink (Coke) fridge. Although our Confectionery sales are in the same boat as were drinks (Woolworths) right near us. No matter what we try at the counter it just struggles.

Im sorry, but what is NRL?

The AFL cards from GG and NDC are going very well. There is almost no interest in the Herald Sun cards this year though.

We are 20% up YOY, ran out last year so hoping stocks hold out, sold 40 packs yesterday, averaging 60 per day on the weekends…

NRL card sales have been on par with last year. After speaking to our News rep i asked about the upcoming Telegraph NRL promo in early May. I would suggest you contact your rep and ask for a copy of the number you will receive. I have since sent back the numbers I know we can sell based on last years numbers, amazing they where going to oversupply again.

Steven AFL is the game they play when they are not manly enough to play NRL ,which is probally at the top of the elite ball sports then followed by soccer and then finally AFL

Shaun if masculinity is measured by bad behaviour towards women, then you’re right ! NRL is way way out in front.

I don’t think the footy cards are on the
decline. Mum’s are saying “no” because
of the retail downturn and the economy
generally. $3 is a lot when you’ve got 3 kids who want one or two packets each.
They’ll pick up again (hopefully next year

My opinion on why card sales are soft is “Choice”. Once upon a time kids had only one choice of card to collect now they have more to choose from. Each year we get the same questions from kids and parents “which one should we collect”. In the end i think they just pass on either. Maybe it is my fault……maybe i should just choose one to stock……whats the odds on picking the most popular ????

Last year in VIC, a lot of auskick footy clubs gave out a free packet of the GG AFL cards to every player at the start of the season, this resulted in the kids only wanting that particular type, hence an early sellout.
A lot of older collectors say the NDC Champion cards are better quality.

Our AFL Cards are up on sales last year by 40% at this time. We have sold 8 Cartons already. That is 80 Boxes.

Last year they sold out in early August. I feel this year they will be sold out by late June

We are blitzing our sales against last year and have already outdone our total sales of 2011 and it’s only Round 9! Not sure if it’s just us but we are seeing sales pick up since you blogged this post?
It is also proving quite difficult chasing extra stock from GG.

I’m up 30 % on this time last year, and have already sold more albums than all of last year. We love encouraging the kids to come in to the store, their parents are so pleased that their kids get acknowledged positively and we have a lot of fun with them.

It is now a fortnight since I asked for more
AFL albums and cards from GG and so far
none have arrived. They did answer my email and tell me that they are on BACKORDER.
Now excuse me for saying this but aren’t we only almost half way through the AFL
    season?
HOW MANY VICTORIAN AGENTS HAVE SOLD OUT?

    NOT MANY I WOULD THINK!

Here in SA we get second class treatment
and after a slow start with the cards this
year I am now turning away dozens of kids
    on a daily basis.

I don’t know how other SA agents are faring but I am very disgruntled with the
    lack of supply.
I have thousands of dollars worth of product unsolicited that is about 50% returnable and when there is a current product that is selling I can’t get any.
    Go figure!!!!!!!

Why go through GG order them direct. You must have a ball park figure on what you would turn in a year use that. And the GG stock for back up and return if you dont go to good.

How are my AFL card sales going? Thanks to the genius’ at G&G not as good as they could have been. After the first distribution in March I sold out of album’s in a week and was getting low on cards, tried to order more online but it wouldn’t accept it so I rung G&G and was told as there was a second distribution no extra stock could be ordered before this went out.
Come the 1st week of May realised I hadn’t received a 2nd lot so rang G&G and asked “How many distibutions of AFL cards are there” to which I was told “Only the 2”. “Well I’ve only received 1”
10 second of keyboard clicking and then “Ooh we’ll get that straight out too you”. Have since gone back and ordered more as these also sold out.
So with 3 weeks of lost sales in April my AFL card sales are not as good as they should be. Thank you Gordon & Gotch.

Like H, up 32% and we have sold a LOT more albums this year. This is probably because this is only our second year with supply of the footy cards and last year we had a bad start.

Every single card and Album I could get my hands on has sold and we have been “dry” for a month. Thankfully Beanie AFL Bears are going well (thank you Mark for the inspritation to get them), three stores near me have had them but I get daily traffic that they don’t so I reckon I’ve done OK (done a second order already from the first stock arrival at the end of June).
I would have hopeful kids turning up and phoning for AFL cards almost every day of the week.

Hi Mark Fletcher, thanks for hosting this blog. This request is for information on the wholesale supplier for AFL cards. We are a newsagency in Fremantle WA and we have frequent requests for these cards but have no supplier as yet. Appreciate your help for a contact, supplying AFL cards at wholesale prices.
