Sunday newsagency management tip: clean up as if your business is for sale

Housing real estate agents provide good advice to people selling their homes: clean it up, fix up obvious problems, remove rubbish, make the home look appealing.

Many retail newsagencies could benefit from following this advice … it’s my management tip today.

Clean out the junk in the shop, the back room and behind the counter. Anything you don’t use should go – give it away, toss it out. Make the business leaner, cleaner and fresh, make it more appealing.

Businesses burdened by years of junk building up and not being used can be a turn off for shoppers and employees. Often, you won’t see the junk until you go to move or close the business.

Pare back and feel good about losing the weight.

We did this a couple of weeks ago behind the counter.

All day customers ask if the newsagency was for sale as the shop seemed so fresh and bright

The hard part is keeping it tidy and fresh which we are failing.

We too have been doing this lately. One example is some phone related products we have had that just arent selling. We started giving them away randomly with phone recharge purchases. We have thrown in some free gift stock with certain purchases and I can tell you its better than having to keep dusting it….!
My desk got a good spring clean to the other day…….gee we Newsagents get sent some crap in the mail dont we?
We are doing a new shop fit next month so there will be a lot more freebies and bargains to come yet.
