Check out two differentiating magazine deals from News Corp. and Bauer media, which I saw at Woolworths on George Street in Sydney yesterday:

And this is yet another reason why we should walk away from magazines completely !

If that is your thinking Paul then you might as well close your shop! I would hazard a guess that most products in your store are sold through competitors. Competitors are doing exactly what I would do if I was in their place.
Bauer titles are old school and not what I prefer to promote as it does not fit in with my plan for my store, yeh I stock them but they do not get the same treatment as other titles. Same goes for News ltd now as their titles perform just as poorly in store, Super Food Ideas, Taste and even delicious are slowing. News Ltd esp do not get it anymore, their newspaper promotions offering 7.5% or 15% depending on what type of store you are is a disgrace. But they will not budge which is going to be to their own detriment.
I am seeing growth in titles like Vegan cooking, niche wellness and puzzle magazines. These are the titles I will promote so yeh walk away from magazines if you want but then be consistent in your approach throughout your whole store and base your decision on data, not emotion.
Magazines for me are a great facilitator to upsell other categories in my store. I have sold hundreds of Funko Pops which are located next to my entertainment magazines. The amount of blind bags we now sell, compared to even 1 year ago is ridiculous and these are also located right next to K Zone etc which creates add on sales for both categories.
I read so many negative comments, time to start chilling out a bit and having fun doing what you do.

I don’t post what I see in majors re magazines to have any newsagent walk away. Rather, I encourage newsagents to make informed decisions about m magazine space allocation and promotion.

Chris, I’m fairly diversified and could happily see magazines off now without a major cash loss to my business. I’ve already replaced them effectively with an alternative which I’m in the process of taking to an even better level with Tower doing the website for me at the moment. Traffic wise may be questionable but with the fall off of the weeklies I suspect long term the loss isn’t great.
Magazine wise I now source some of the magazines for the niche I service directly and enjoy much higher GP on them (40%) compared to getting them through Gotch and on some of them I still enjoy free delivery and unsold returns. 😉
