Agreement on NSW Lotteries sale

It appears that agreement has been reached on the legislation required to put NSW Lotteries up for sale.  I am sure that NANA and the ANF will have different views on who achieved what for newsagents in this.

the announcement from the ANF today made it seem as if they did all the work, werent they the ones who were happy with 3 years but NANA pushed for 5??

Scott you are right. On August 13 they said 3 years is better than none. They joined the NSW Lotteries issue once they saw that NANA was pursuing this.

Five years was NANA’s argument to match franchise agreements and commercial leases it also fits into the fact that the NSW Lottery agreemnet is a roll over 5 year arangement.
So much for the ANF understanding with their push shove superior attitude.
Let’s hope that the next CEO can work with the State Associations to enact a body that is unified and working in the same direction.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE MEETINGS THE ANF ATTEMPTED TO ARRANGE WITH NANA TO DISCUSE THE LOTTERY ISSUE AND NANA KEEPED SAYING NO TO THEM.

Do you believe this will affect the sale of a New South Wales newsagency with this uncertaintity looming?

    Stuart,
The ANF wanted 3 years moratorium and NANA wanted 5 years NANA would not compromise. NANA won ANF claimed victory today-UNBELIEVABLE.

We can all scwabble over who achieved what and who didnt but lets get back to the big picture here.
5 years is better than nothing for now. We have 5 years to do business plans to close our businesses in 5years if our leases arent renewed. 5years is nothing! The associations should have been looking at keeping it in the newsagency channel. Full Stop! Peoples lives will be in ruins over this people, newsagencies will close, homes will be lost and things will never be the same again. We have been shafted by so many big companies on a daily basis that we have become laxed about it. How many of you filled out the forms that NANA sent out recently and faxed them to the three people they wanted you to? How many people have written to their local NSW Government representative? Dont leave it up to someone else….numbers talk! please, please, please be pro-active in this.

Gaye, You are right however if it’s any consolation 5 years is Commmercial Reality. The current contract with NSW State Lotteries which everyone signs is only for 5 years -rollover-if no incidence occurs. It also stipulates NO Goodwill. Franchises have a five year contract MOST Shopping Centres a 5 year lease and newspaper contracts are 5 years or 3 years. We have to get used to commercial prctices and use our commercial strength to constantly enforce our unique position as do the Chemists.
    Keep sendding those faxes.

I fear that Gaye might be right. We purchased our business 16 months ago and paid a large goodwill mainly because of lotteries. There was no hint of it being sold then. We also had to pay a large deposit to lotteries for the rights to sell their product. This amount is non refundable (and not even tax deductible). All this money is lost if we lose lotteries. There is no talk of compensation being offered. We cannot hope to pay off our business loan in five years. Our best case scenario is for the NANA consortium to get up, or if not, Tattersals to get the gig.
And yes, as NANA is the only association I will be a member of, I did everything they asked us to do. Unfortunately my local member was never available to take a call.
This Govt. only sees dollar signs and would not lose any sleep at all over filling the coffers of the large end of town at the expense of family run small business.

Why would you sell a cash cow like NSW lotteries in the first place so they can blow it and send the state broke or broker and i dont understand why the libs want it sold

I definately sent off all the faxes and actually got a nice replly from my member saying it was being passed onto my legislative member.

I am going talkback radio now – and encourage you all to do it too. I just want the public to know that “newsagents are NOT happy with the 5 year coverage” that is being touted on the news.

ALso, for a full transcript of the parliament debate – you can view the Hansard transcript at:

have a read… it is long but very interesting.

Graeme anon posed at 5 a question I believe you are well qualified to answer but you have not Any reason

anon, While I would lik to answer your question with a firm NO, the reality is that some buyers will factor this into the value they place on a newsagency.

Lazy newsagents who take money across the counter and do not engage in their business will be hit harder.

Proactive newsagents who diversify their range and appeal will fare much better.

The best way to respond is to focus on balancing your business. Draw traffic from other areas. Ensure thaat your shopping baskets are filled across more categories.

Get known for something other than lotteries.

    Warren,
I will answer anon’s question very soon perhaps today. Newstrade is currently talking with all our prospective purchasers, giving our AFTER listeneing to theirs. So far so could some of the conversation to date is just hard labour nonetheless it is friutful overall. Hooe to get back with some open feedback and reality checks.

The lamb(NSW Newsagents) is sacrificed. Why NSW newsagents have to pay for the prices of mismanagement of financial affairs of the Labor government? This government is totally rotten and inept. You believe it or not, Even they’re given 600milliion dollars for the sales of NSW Lotteries, they would still waste the money. Why? The NSW Labor government is not a good money manager. Some of the MPs are not able to manage a newsagency as we do. What a shame!

The ANF has shown again that it thinks a press release is all they need to write to satisfy newsagents. Fools. I am as bad as everyone else because I write about them. I really should ignore them.

David, The best way for newsagents to resolve national representation is to quit membership of the ANF. If plenty more quit they will have no choice but to act.

*There are additional costs for purchasing NSW Lotteries products over the internet compared to buying from a traditional retail agency. The additional charges cover, amongst other things, the cost of providing a secure internet based system, and are approved under the regulatory framework that governs the sale of NSW Lotteries products. What a rort found this on nsw lotteries web site how could it possibly cost more if the agents can get by with their commission and the price has also gone up
