Bagged food titles block shoppers

fhn-goodfood-sep2010.JPGWe are promoting Good Food in the ACP basket builder unit this week. I am disappointed that this title is once again bagged.  Food magazines need to be browser friendly.  Just stand in a newsagency and watch how shoppers interact with food titles.  They often look two or three, comparing recipes.  Bag the magazine and you miss being part of this.

Its disappointing from retail perspective that such a good cover is diminished by a bag. It’s strange from a publishing perspective that a magazine would create a cover designed to attract attention then put up a barrier to customer interaction once they get the magazine in their hands.

And a free bbq “cookbook” – seriously. Its more flyer than cookbook and no different to the thousand other free cookbooks that have taken up residence on the front of half of the magazine category over the past 2 years. Many customers are going to be instantly disappointed with this kind of rinse and repeat freebie. Unless you’re going to add real value with a freebie, don’t bother. Don’t devalue your brand by creating a fantastic magazine then pairing it with far-less-than-fantastic freebies.
