Responding to the Express Media Group offer

We are responding to the bonus margin opportunity and the no full copy return decision by Express Media Group by placing their titles in good positions in the appropriate categories. As the photo shows, the EMG title features on the left of the country section and Country Collections from Universal Magazines is on the right.

We’re happy to be promoting two Australian magazine titles as the beacon titles in the country section of our newsagency.

Maybe I have noticed it before or maybe it is new – I like the clarity of the value proposition printed on the bcd for the EMG pack.  Making it clear that you get the current issue and $23 value for $8.95 is an important pitch.

We are promoting all EMG titles we receive in this higher-profile way to see what we can achieve from a sales perspective.  Our hope is good news all round.

We have asked EMG to supply stock of all of their titles for the next three months so that we can see what works in our business. This allows us time for the sales to guide our business decisions.  We have found EMG to be most helpful in navigating this.  They control their own allocations so it is easy for them to set this up and monitor performance.

I’ve spoken with the Customer Service Dept at EMG a couple of times & they have been terrific with sending through lists of their titles & organising for the increases I have requested. This was so much easier than having to go through the Network Services website. I am looking forward to promoting their magazines & seeing a corresponding sales increase.

EMG rang me to see if we needed extra supplies on particular titles! Imagine that, a publisher that’s interested. I have noted that many of their titles are selling well and increasing. Looks like they’ve done their research for each magazine’s target market – wish ACP would. Has anyone noticed that over the last 4 issues of AWW they have put channel 10 personalities on the cover – a tough sell for a (former) channel 9 magazine. The result for us has been that AWW, for the first time in my 20 years is no longer No.1 for monthly magazines – our new No.1 is Better Homes & Gardens – who also happened to ring me the other day….would seem to be a trend for pro-active publishers.

EMG is on the right track and will certainly be getting premium space – in place of the extra work we have previously done for ACP. Better Homes and Gardens is now the only magazine that can consistently warrant extra premium space all month.

I have tried to give EMG titles a good go in my store with this new arrangement, but I have found that I have run out of shelf space and am getting titles at the end of the month, as well as at the start. I will not have the space in my recycle bin to get rid of the topped magazines. Again I say I have given EMG a good go, but without early returning a large number if them I will not be able to pay my next account.

I noiced there were quite a few EMG magazines that rolled in today that we had never had before. Kept one or two in lower quantities than supplied and returned the rest. With the planning for a new relay and the cutting of about 1/4 of my magazine pockets I won’t have the room for unsolicitored supply anymore.

The bikie publication in issue # 284’s Live to Ride has a pernicious cartoon seriously ridiculing homosexual men with AIDS. Not funny !
