Newsagents need to get serious about IT housekeeping

Through my work with my newsagency software company I know that too many newsagents do not back their business data up every day and too many do not have current virus protection. Both situations are dangerous for newsagents and their businesses.

Backing your data up every day is essential. No excuses. It can be done without human intervention and without the need to load a USB stick or other media.

Keeping your virus software (and virus definitions) current is essential. No excuses.

The problem is that I hear too many excuses. Newsagents looking for help to recover from a hardware crash without any data backup have no one to blame for their situation but themselves.

This is business management 101.

There is a significant cost to the channel from newsagents who do not backup daily and or do not maintain virus protection.

We have started backing up to drop box every night and the back up can be recovered from any computer I choose if needed, even my i-Phone. Every time my laptop is started it updates the latest back up.
Automatic back ups are not happening for me though, could Tower perhaps send all customers an advice sheet on automated back ups or is this best done via the help desk.

How can you take your back up off site ( in case of fire etc ) , if it is all automatic and you don’t need a usb stick etc ??
I am paranoid about the process and have 2 sets of 7 usb sticks – one for each day of the week and one set is always off site. Even if my latest back up fails I have a complete set available.

Max, drop box stores your back up off site and downloads it to any device you load the program onto.

Brendan you must have really fast internet to upload backups to cloud.

our current backup is well over 1gb even with max compression so until NBN arrives its not going to happen.

Gary, I’m a subagent only so probably have a much smaller data base than yours to back up, mine at present is 149mb, or perhaps you need to archive some old data. The upload doe take time, over an hour, but the point is its simple for everyone at the store, retrievable from multiple devices and all I do is back up at the store then leave with the rest happening while I’m driving home. By keeping it simple back ups are far more likely to be done COB every day. No forgotten, lost or faulty USB’s are another advantage.
