Crazy magazine day

Today we saw one of the heaviest magazine loads in recent memory. It felt like some of the usual first week of the month wednesday stock shifted to the first Monday.

Yeah I got a surprise when at the pile when they turned up, still I’d prefer a large delivery at the start of the month than the end so I’m not complaining. Hopefully this means a light load on Thursday.

We had a great Father’s Day week trading and would have liked Fishing / Surfing / Car mags on Thursday. We could have sold more of those magazines and i thought some of those titles could have moved forward to capitalise on the event, but like Steve I would prefer at start of month than end of month for cash flow reasons.

Obviously most of us are like Steve (comment2) and prefer a “dumping of mags” at start of month not the end for cash flow reasons.

I researched quite heavily in the past week the internet sites offering discount magazine subscriptions. I did this because enquiries for this has increased with customers in-store. I cannot offer the same discounts those sites offer as I cannot compete in offering the same deal to consumers. The amounts of discounts offered range from a few % up to 70%. One site advertised an extra 10% off leading into Father’s DAY.

When magazine’s went into Newsagencies the 25% commission was agreed upon largely because of the “exclusivity” component Newagencies had in selling magazine’s. Times have changed significantly with de-regulation. It is crazy that the consumer is offered a greater discount than the retailer.

Rather than chasing Hubbed and other service orientated business, the ANF should be DEMANDING commissions of 40% from EVERY publisher.

Perhaps then Newsagents would be welcoming New stock for a weekend such as Father’s Day?

Would love to here the thoughts of those Publishers who do not offer such commissions.

Rather it on a Monday than a Thursday. Hopefully it’s a new trend. We were sold a balancing of the load between the 2 days, yet Thursdays are twice as heavy as a Monday with more putaways. A start would be to move partworks to Mondays.
