Can anyone tell me what Dale Jordan means by “Please submit the new ‘Late Delivery Claim Forms’ in the usual way?

I have no knowledge of this form in this state and was wondering what it means for Newsagents in Vic. What is the outcome for Newsagents as a consequence of completing this claim form?

Dennis, we get $30 for the 1st 100 home deliveries, and $15 for every 100 home deliveries after that. The claim is paid if the delivery is 90 minutes late or more.

In my case I receive $300, unfortunately the extra wages incurred were about 12 hours @ $39.48 per hour equals $473.76 plus super $43.82, which means I am done over $200 before allowing for lost sales due to subagents getting papers up to 3 hours late.

Papers arrived Saturday 5.30am. Drivers have to leave halfway through the run to get their kids to sport, I have to organise lifts my kids to get to sport because I’m still out doing the run. Customers ring up abusing us due to late deliveries and not a bloody murmur from News Limited as to why this is happening or how long this will continue for. What do I tell the 2 most important people in my business – my customers and staff? A question unanswered by News Ltd (Qld). Unacceptable delivery times – 4.30am and after on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday occur on a regular basis.

Dean, make a revised claim to News. If that fails, lodge a complaint and request for mediation with the Small Business Commissioner of Victoria. If that fails, make an application to VCAT.

Have never heard of late payment fee in NSW.
I’m with you Shaun, my eyes don’t like these new captcha codes at all. Have been trying to comment for days but keep failing 🙂

Jenny, never heard of compo for NSW for late papers. But we did get compo for carrying the Melb papers which we had to pickup as they would not deliver to our shop. This ceased in March this year so we increased the sale price accordingly.

On another matter my 91yo old father in-law is have a problem with his delivery of papers to his villa in a large retirement village (we have none in our area)Can someone advise how they deliver the papers in this case? I believe they should be wrapped, he spent last Sunday picking up 60 sheets of what was left of his DT he has on occasions jammed them in letterboxes. I have dealings with this agent before about overcharging my father in-law and his attitude is unbelievable. In the end I had to reveal I was a newsagent and had to us the treat of reporting him to News, if again he would not refund the money.

Gregg, we drive into all retirement villages and most villa complexes. Papers are rolled in plastic and delivered as near to their front doors/garages as possible.
The only exception are gated villas, small complexes as you can’t turn around, and villas where we are asked to leave the customers paper at front entrance so as not to wake up the other residents.
We had one in Mittagong for years with elderly customers but could not drive in because of one very difficult resident who controlled the body corporate.

Thanks Jenny, it is what I would expect would be the norm. I think this guy is just taking as many short cuts as he can to save money and time. Unfortunately for this agent he is about to get a whole pile of cancelations to subs

Seems nuts to me that late payment fees are not a nationwide standard across all states….what is it the ANF do again?

    Dean @post#3,

Thanks very much for that, for taking the time to post some specifics. Very, very interesting.

It seems we have News Ltd looking to centralise decision making, bring in common (national) remuneration packages and a move to a new national circulation and subscription computer system called iServices.

So it appears to be a move to one National body of decision makers that has a number of state branches, so one should expect to see a common set of policies applying around the country. That should make operating life easier for the Publisher and less complex for Newsagents.

Therefore in my opinion it is an event to be welcomed.

However, at the moment, we still see evidence of a massive disparity with how Newsagents are treated within different states.

In Victoria, we have News Ltd’s Dale Jordan clearly demonstrating his tangible understanding of the “pressures these occurrences” – (late papers) – “place on Newsagents” and yet in some other states, News Ltd does not demonstrate any of the concerns that he so clearly has on this particular matter of late deliveries.

Certainly in SA after a meeting regarding the “Introduction to iServices” one would have to say that the local branch of News Ltd here in Adelaide clearly does not reflect the same level of concern for Newsagents in this state as does the Victorian Team. But that’s another storey about newly introduced forward publishing issues that are aggrieving Newsagents in this state.

Perhaps News Ltd’s National Management Team is beginning to work through all of these home state inconsistencies that have been put in place over the past decades and in more recent times. I certainly hope so.

News Ltd ought to provide some National clarity on the late paper delivery issue. I hope they do. The policy ought to be the same across the country.

The last thing this Industry needs at the moment is for the race to the bottom, to see who can provide the best 3rd world Distribution Newsagent service on offer, to continue. Having said that, I have resisted the temptation to join the race.

When we had a recalcitrant customer who wouldn’t allow our driver to deliver to each
unit we would deliver the papers to that person with a delivery list on the top of the papers and tell them that their only option was to do the delivery themselves if they wouldn’t allow us into the complex.
It worked 99% of the time and we could then go in and deliver ourselves.
OMG I DO NOT MISS THE ROUND AT ALL!!

    Shaun,

I’m really interested in the time iServices provides supply (draw) figures. Also how do you cope with iServices NOT providing (on a Friday) Saturday, Sunday & Monday figures (as Connect does now)?
In SA it’s a huge issue NOT having Mondays draw until 3.30pm Sunday. Easter will be a real pain.

It is a huge issue for me, as I go home before final figures are out most days. The time final figures are provided is inconsistent, somedays you have 2 days in advance. I have checked from home at 6pm before and they still weren’t there. Generally though you have the figures about 3-5pm.

The best you can do is take the figure from the draw changes tab (less any general cuts that have been announced), which is your total supply excluding subscribers, and compare that to your system’s calculation of total papers required less subscribers.

This is not entirely fool proof, as I frequently over or under allocate subagents based on this, but without final figures it is the best we have.
