I personally would love it if this was set up outside my shop. As a delivery newsagent I am all for increasing my weekend newspaper deliveries. The days of trying to increase over the counter newspaper sales are over but any increases in home deliveries is fine with me. Whilst I approve of it I know others would not and that is what makes it challenging for Suppliers as you may upset one section when you please another.

I am different to you Chris.

I am delivery only, and see this as a digital subscription with a free weekend paper thrown in. I believe at some stage they will dump the free paper, meaning I don’t support the promotion, despite us receiving a small increase in weekend subscribers because of it.

That’s the issue Dean. Its a hard one as my point of view concerning deliveries would be different to you. I am at the point now where I support any promo the companies do as I am not putting any of my resources into it as I see it as declining category. I love deliveries as it is a great connection with our local regional community and a high percentage of our delivery customers are retail customers as well. If I jagged a few extra deliveries on the weekend from this I would be happy. But I am spending my time and resources on more profitable ventures that are focused on areas that are more under my control only. These include stationery, cards and gifts.
Hopefully the delivery service you would give any new subscribers over the weekends in this deal would help prevent them from wanting to drop the physical papers on the weekend.
Its a tough industry when we are all different and find different points of views out of what suppliers do to promote their product.

I saw a very similar promo booth at another QLD shopping centre spruking the Courier Mail digital offering. And I have seen ads all over the train network for the same thing.

You would think that News doesn’t like print anymore…

We have a booth in our Mall it has been here before the News Ltd Anzac Coin Promotion began. My concern is they expect our business to support them with all promotions and yet they have been in our mall for over a month trying to take away our business.

If you ran News Ltd what would you do. Bury your head in the sand and not promote digital? I think they are trying to find a mix where they promote both print and digital. It is up to you as an individual business whether you support their promotions, they are not holding a gun to your head. My thought process is that I can not control what News Ltd are doing with their business but I have control over what my business does.

An increase from News Ltd for home delivery fees of .55 of 1c per paper – do you really think News Ltd care or understand maintenance costs, rising fuel prices, wages, waiting time on late papers, having to service our elderly customers to their doorstep and all for .55 of 1c per paper. The ANF should not have accepted this, it is a disgrace.

Don’t do the promotions, do not do deliveries if the fee increases are not good enough for you to cover costs. As we have all seen over the years, the ANF will not do anything to help you. Make your own business decisions. This is business and if some people feel intimidated, well sorry but toughen up or go and work for someone where you do not have to make tough decisions or upset people.
I also have a News Ltd rep who “demands” I send him photos of promotions by a certain deadline. Do I send him photos, sometimes depending on whether the promotion fits into MY decisions concerning promotions I am running in store at that time.
I do not want to sound rude but if we let other people rule how we run our business then a)why go into business for yourself in the first place b)how will you succeed when you have no control.

Interesting titbit is they don’t bring their own copies – they get them from the local agency
