Taking on Big W

blogcook.JPGHere is the poster we have created for our COOK book promotion. Remember, Big W are selling this for $36.95, less than our buy price. Our store is being dressed with A1 posters surrounding our stock with a hope that the stack em high watch em fly strategy works. Big W are demonstrating a lack of creativity in their approach, but they usually do. While discounting will move the stock, the question has to be what does this do for the brand and for Big W. Deep discounting is like a drug addiction. Either you continue or, through intervention, you clean up and see that there is a brighter future. Our approach is rooted in a longer term view which respects the product and our own brand.

I do work at Big W and people are more interested in saving money than in carelessly spending it. Why go to a bookstore that is overpriced when we have the item for less? Why go into a CD store and pay upwards of $30 for a CD we sell for less than $20? Your logic makes no sense, especially to the average Australian. Big W employs many people and does ‘good works’ as well. It may not be the prettiest, shiniest, or newest store, but we deliver! And we don’t rip people off by overcharging in the first place!

You’re entitled to your view. Businesses like Big W make it only about price. To achieve a lower price you forego charming, creative happy employees. This is not a one size fits all world despite what Big W would have us believe. Mark

Well I accept that you are also entitled to your opinion too. However, our store employees many happy and charming people. To generalise that a larger retailer can only employee uncaring idiots is unfair. When you consider my level of education and personal goals, and the time and care I take in my part-time work (that pays for my sparkling education) I wonder how you can say that. I wonder how qualified you are to may the judgements you are making? And one size fits most, especially when you aren’t uber rich and quite so snobby!

The label of “uncaring idiots” is your term. Big retailers like Big W stifle creativity among employees. They must. In a small retail environment individuals shine, they can express themselves and this is where a more attrctive tapestry of society springs from.
