Selling confectionery

We’re applying to a couple of councils for permission to sell prepackaged sealed confectionery. The process is a bureaucratic mess – wasteful busy work. This is prepackaged confectionery for goodness sake. It frustrates me how councils waste small business time and money on these things.

Forgive my ignorance …. but why do you have to apply to councils to sell prepackaged confectionary?

A friend of ours started getting food inspections at $88 per 6 months for totally prepacked confectionary. You only have to watch the current affairs shows every night to see that council behaviour is getting more out of control every year. It seems to take a certain type to be up the ladder in councils. Those that don’t like the bull go into other industries. I wouldn’t have thought you would have to apply either, but it doesn’t surprise me if you do have to these days, for a fee of course! You must be made to jump through hoops with silly forms that make little sense. Makes the council people feel warm and fuzzy for sure.

Why indeed do we need the piece of paper. Here’s an update – once council did it in minutes by fax, another will take two days by mail and another has made an appointment to see there the prepackaged confectioner will be to ensure it is safe. What a waste of time.

So this comes about because of some food safty/handling requirement I assume? Council bylaws?

We cut and prepack fresh fruit and vegetables and don’t need to apply for permission to do so.

Yeah, they think we may have hygiene issues selling sealed chocolate bars. Ugh!

What happens is councils organise the annual Council Conference at some exotic location where they dream up ideas to to further tax the ratepayer who has funded the junket in the first place. We too were hounded some time ago to register though it was free of cost, but like you I can’t understand their reasoning when we are selling product that is pre packaged and I would assume under strict health regulations. I can only dream of the day that Newsagents had to justify their position due to lack of work as these bureaucrats must.
