Stealing the crucifix

prayers.JPGThe crucifix from the front of a children’s book, My Little Book of Prayers, was stolen from our book sale table earlier this week.  How pathetic is that?  Given the price of the book, the crucifix would have to be worth less than 20 cents so I ask why?  Because they can I guess.

Well today i caught my first theif ,we have been having a problem with people opening the sealed adult magazines so when we see someone looking at them now we hover around them in the distance .As it turns out he didn’t want to open it he just wanted to take the whole thing .After he left i wanted to make sure i was 100% so i checked the security footage and yep he stole it and it took he 5 attempts in doing so he kept changing his mind .And as it turned out he was a regular customer that has an account that has now been charged twice the amount that it would have cost him becasue i want him to come and question it and i will show him the footage of his actions .
And i am sure his wife would want to know what he was doing buying adult magazines ….
By the way this man was in his mid 40s well known in this small town and you would not think he would steel from you .

You have just learnt that there is no one “type” of person that is most likely to steal from you.

I would also question how you have outlined above how you plan to deal with the situation.

In business, under no circumstances should you involve yourself with another persons private life or marriage/relationship. You have no way of predicting, especially in situations like this example, of what consequences your actions may have.

You have the evidence in the form of footage.Either have a quiet chat to the guy and ban him from your premises, or make a complaint to the police.

And you don’t think that his wife would question why the police are at the door .I would much rather him have the guts to aproach me knowing he has been caught out and if his wife finds out good i am happy i don’t care if i hurt his feelings or anyone elses that steal from me . Iwork damm hard for my money and for soeone to take it away i don;t think so .

Of course she would. But it then isn’t your problem. But possibly involving yourself directly in another persons relationship WILL have consequences you don’t expect. What happens if the relationship breaks up because of your actions and the person decides that violence directed your way or the way of your family is the way to deal with it? I’ve seen something very similiar to that happen.

I agree with your thoughts, but the way to handle it is through the police.

    Shaun,

I have to agree with JohnH – the police are almost always the best option. There are processes in place to contain law and order for a reason. We may not alawys like how “the system” handles it, but being consistent is an integral part of such societal structures.

Too many small business owners get caught up in a mindset of revenge. Don’t let it consume you.

Ok i decideed to call this gentleman up last night and discuss what happend poblem is fixed i got my money he learnt a lesson and his wife knows nothing about it .As far as the police are concerned i would not waste there time on the matter as the system would not allow anything to happen . Last year my delivery car was stolen the police did an excellent job in finding the culprits within an hour i had my car back .A few months later it went to court and there was no charges laid for stealing the car only for drink driving and unlicsenced driving .How the so called system works i do not know .

    Shaun,

I’d ignore Lauren if I were you. She also comments using the names Anon, Ronny and Julian. She/he is a game player.
