Newspaper freebie fails

fhn_papers_freebies_oct10.JPGThe gifts offered with newsapapers on Saturday (Herald Sun – free Intralot lottery scratch ticket and The Age – free Ferrero chocolate) didn’t work as intended in our newsagencies.  No measurable kick in sales and no strong interest by customers in the freebies.  I am surprised by this – for the lottery ticket especially.

We had an increase in Herald Sun sales for the Intralot promotion of 14% however we have enough chocolates at home now to impress our friends for years to come.

customers do not want to engage with Intralot; our customers proved that on the weekend. The sooner they dissappear the better!

Page 12 of Monday’s Herald Sun tells the tail of Intralot.

Waffling Watling says its Tattersalls problem that their games are not winners and that the Government are $85 million in the red because of Intralots non performance.

Have a thought Mr Journalist about the Newsagents who invested millions in the first place and also Mr Watling should remember that if his Company marketed the products in a simplified form from day one and had reps on the road then things may have been better.

Can’t wait for the contract to come up when all but a few outlets will depart the sinking ship and then what do they do for outlets over the following five years ???

    Shame Labor shame !!!!!!!!!!!!

We gave away 52 out of 400 scratchies.

I have also been noticing that Intralot’s sales are in freefall at my shop.

My average weekly sales are less than half what they were this last year. Scratchies have dropped by 67%.

Mark, I remember some months ago you were telling everyone to give Intralot a chance, while everyone on this blog was condemning them. I would be interested to know if your thoughts have changed. I would also be interested to know if the sales drops are unique to my business, or if it is the general trend everywhere.

My opinion was always that if I was buying my existing business today knowing what I know now, that I would still be forced to get Intralot (despite them being a loss maker), solely because of the scratchies. After reviewing the numbers this morning, I think I have changed my mind, and would accept the loss of scratchies, as they no longer generate enough sales to worry about.

ps – I am selling my shop and going distrbution only. I will be advising the buyer of my shop not to get Intralot.

you missed the boat and the point of my notes.

A producy like Intralot needs to be marketed by the Company as well and the prizes need to reflect current day desires.

They realise both points too late.

Also Intralot need to start accepting the blame and not the Newsagents who sell the product.

The way to fix this is:

    1. Get Intralot scratchie product in the scratchie bays previously used by Tattersalls.
    2. Reengineering Intralot games
    3. Re launch the brand around selling the dream.

Tattersalls must pat themselves on the back everytime they hear Intralot complaining about how they are to blame for their poor sales.

I have said it before, and say it again,Intralots failer was to ask for the license fee. They needed to be in every shop that previously had scratchies, but there license fee stopped that. Some towns you cant even buy a scratchy. There will never be any success with Intralot, BUT I do beleive they could be successful if they rolled out to every Tatts outlet, no license fee, promoted their Keno for one game per day. ( Thats if they still run Keno !!! ) You have to hook the fish before you reel it in. If its too hard to find an outlet that sells Scratchies, and then search to find somewhere to cash it, then its all too hard. Its amazing how smart people can be so dumb.
