New Lancaster Bomber partwork series

lancaster-bomber.JPGWe were surprised to receive the Build Your Own Lancaster Bomber partwork series yesterday morning. All we received was stock – unannounced.  No marketing collateral, no support at all. We are used to being given an opportunity to set our own quantities for partworks. This enables us to help them achieve maximum sell-through. The lack of support for this partwork is odd. Maybe they do really only want us to sell the first couple of issues to get subscriptions rolling. I hope not.

I had the marketing lass in to market this title in my shop but I didn’t receive any at all so it was hard to do a promo. GG announced we were getting them on Monday but here it is Thursday and we haven’t got it.

I had a newsagency for 3 years. What’s new. They never told us what or when. It just arrives. Mark, set your own quantities? Unheard of in my day, what a luxury.

Rob, We are fortunate. It has taken a long time to get to this position. We have been doing it for four years now with great success for us and the publisher – we sell more partworks.

Could someone please tell me who can sell me this series overtime in total so that I can build this model?
From the newsagents point of view what is the best way to approach this project from the customers point of view?

GJ, Talk to your local newsagent and lock in a putaway. They will keep each issue aside as it is released.

another frustrating start to a partworks. Didnt receive anyof this but got stacks of the build the body one. work it out cause i cant. Especially as we are situated in a high retirement area cant see our customers interested in the body one, but have had lots of enquiries about the lancaster. Wish there was an opt in or out system with partworks, ask us before distribution if we want it. Too sensible perhaps. We are a darrell lea outlet and they fax us any new products and we can use whether we are put of the new release. Works well.

Get it though your local newsagent – that is far better than through Bissett. It helps local jobs and ensures that your copy is kept safe and protected for you.

The same thing happened here Chris, we got zero bomber but 3 boxes of body works. Also $1800 for a model is steep to say the least.

As a customer I think the total cost of completing the model absolutely prohibitive.

Silly marketing ploy that will make customers like me turn away from the doors of the newsagent.

It take 125 issues to build this at $15 an issue minus the $13.50 discount for the first issue. $1861.50 for a model is crazy. How could people sell this crap.

adam, you will have to buy all of them and build the bomber and then decide if it is crap. nobody knows if it is crap till they have a completed one in their hands…. im just saying its a little early to cast such harsh views

Hi Peter, I’m sure the model itself is fine, although not worth $1800. I don’t like these magazines, the over all cost is ridiculous and chances are mum and dad are going to be forking out the money.

    Peter, I’m with Adam here.
In all good conscience, I don’t think I could even try to sell someone this series with any expectation of good value for money, regardless of whether or not the model itself was any good. I’d want it to have its engines running and a year’s worth of free spirits/castor oil (or whatever they run models on these days) for that kind of dosh.
I wouldn’t fork out 2 grand (really?? nearly nineteen hundred dollars??) of my hard-earned before assessing the worth of it all. Having a couple of years to decide whether I was going to be disappointed or satisfied along the way makes absolutely no sense to me.
Then there’s the sure possibility of copping said disappointment from the customer when they finally work out they’ve been gypped in a very big way.
    No way.

i actually talked one of my regular customers out of one yesterday, he didnt realise it would take 2 years and 2 grand to build, i cant push these onto people without telling them the downside, if i could i might be a car salesman instead of a modern retail business owner (formally a newsagent, but that shingle doesnt fit my business anymore)he was a bit shocked to find out the fine print and was grateful i pointed it out to him before he started, actually said thanks and left with a smile.

im all for making customers aware, but talking them out of a sale seems silly.

we have a customer who is about to finish the bismark ship, and it has a similar cost.

he is aware the cost and time it has taken to aquire the parts, but its his choice.

more over he has a commitment to come into the shop EVERY week to pick it up and give me 33%.

i would never personally do one of these partworks, but talking someone out of it is stupid.

when i say i talked him out of it, i made him aware of how long and how much it costs in the end, he wasnt aware of the details until i told him. he was very thankful i took the time to explain it all and didnt just go for the quick kill for a few dollars. probably have him as a customer for life now. also will save me the time and money chasing unreliable supply, missing stock and broken deliveries down the track anyway, like my poor customer who is also trying to complete the bismark

Is there any chance that someone has that someone has the lancaster bomber issues 1 to 5?
If so I would pay reasonable costs
    regards
    Michael
