Watch out for Smith Journal today

The second issue of the very popular Smith Journal is out today. I URGE newsagents to NOT early return this. Newsagents who carried the title did very well last year. For more info see my blog post from Saturday.

My experience with Smith Journal is that it sells through the on sale period, even to the last week. It is not like many other titles where the majority of the sales are won in the week.

The other important pint is that Smith Journal attracts a younger male shopper, a valuable younger male shopper.  Like Frankie magazine except a guy rather than  girl.

    Mark,

    Hiya Allan.

Alf here from Morrison Media/frankie press.

SUGGESTED CATEGORIES TO RANGE SMITH JOURNAL: Special Interest, Current Affairs, Lifestyle & Fashion, Art & Literature, Photography & Culture (It varies depending on your specific store ranging) We know not every publication is for every store, we we’ve found the mentioned categories are a good suggestion.

We strongly suggest NOT ranging next to “men’s interest” publications with Chicks in Bikinis”.
Think more along the lines of Monocle, Time, National Geographic, and other specialist publications.

    I hope that helps.

Allan, we stole and idea (I think it was June’s) and made our own header “The Thinking Mans Magazine” and place it right above our newspapers near our financial and business magazines. We did not get it on the shelves until mid afternoon but sold one within half an hour. I think thios title will grow month to month for us jast as Frankie did.

Hi there, just a magazine buyer here. I stumbled across your blog when I was trying to find distributors for Smith Journal (tried every single newsagent locally before I found the places listed on the Smith Journal website -only four shops in Brisbane).

When I was looking for it though, I really didn’t know where to look but I did scour the culture/art/photography section thinking that was the most likely. I love the idea of “The Thinking Man’s Magazine” but feel it excludes women – which I am. Though I do know it’s being marketed towards men so I guess you can’t really escape such labelling.

Just thought I’d throw in my 2c. 🙂

Thanks Tee, I’ve now put a few Smiths around with my womens mags next to Vanity Fair, Mindfood, Oprah etc etc. I already had some in General interest nead the geographics, and in Mens business.
