Kudos to Tatts for introducing barcodes on their coupons that contain the ticket value and can be scanned by Point of Sale software. This move will help newsagents track lottery cash. I first approached Tatts seeking this more than ten years ago.
Shame on Tatts for not advising software companies directly.
The cynic in me wonders why this change has been introduced now. Is there another retailer keen for the barcode innovation?
is that happening across all states Mark?

Qld – yes

The cynic in me would say that is put there as that is what is required for either Woolies or Colse. With the exception of fruit & veg everything needs to have a barcode to be accepted through their POS’s.

Maybe just a coming out now due to us in qld just getting new machines a few months ago

saidly I agree with Angelo

Perhaps a Tatts rep could clarify the reason behind this and confirm which POS supplier they consulted?

How is this going to ever work there are so many millions of combinations to have a barcode to and not to mention throwing stock figures out all over the place . In order to sell a product with a barcode it would be ideal to have a number in the stock screen , well this cannot happen .

I wouldn’t think that there is any limitation to the number of barcodes. If I’m not mistaken all that happens is that the barcodes get a little longer or are of a different type in some way. Then again who’s to say that if it goes into the two majors that the whole box and dice of possible combinations would be on offer?
Me thinks they would only offer a selected range of the most popular products but I am probably starting to jump at shadows.

i don’t fully understand how on earth it would work .
Barcode has to be entered into stock or it will not scan . you could have a $ 9.00 lotto $9.10 lotto 9.15, 9.18 etc it is endless the amount of different price ranges there could be

If they are only doing it for the quick picks then that is useless as well because it is a lot quicker just to press the button on the screen than what it is to scan a few tickets seems like a big waste of time to me

What if you are only selling Super, Mini, Regular, Maxi and Jumbo Picks in all of the product ranges?
Don’t they already sell limited ranges of products in 7 eleven on that basis? My understanding is both Coles and Woolies don’t have buttons for any products and that it is the barcode that rules.

Would we then be permited to have a POS screen in the Tatts only area.

Have a look at retailersweb.tattsgroup as they have an explanation of how the variable price barcode works. Problem is they have not talked to the software companies or thought about how we can benefit at store level.

Thanks Richard now it makes sense , Maybe i should read my retailers web more often

One problem i see is that the 2 barcodes are to close together

Shaun that won’t be a problem. The price of the ticket is in the barcode which is cool. That Tatts is introducing this without talking to the newsagency software companies is appalling yet typical. They will be annoyed that I have written about this. What they need to understand is that they have created this problem for themselves.

Question
QP I understand with barcodes.
How are they going to scan payouts.

Mark, I went into a Coles Express yesterday and instead of the standard would you like a chocolate etc etc. I was asked if I would like to buy a quick pick? What upset me was the fact that apart from a couple of signs and a Tatts terminal that was it. How come we have to spend $20-30000 for a Tatts fit out and they do not. Double standard I think.

Rowan, Coles/Woolies rule the roost in retail and they simply squash any supplier or business in their way, this would include Tatts being told we do it our way or not at all. They have to much power in the market. eg, try and buy a case of Coke from Coke a Cola at the same price the duo sell it for.

Does each Coles outlet require a lottery licence or is this another abuse of their power?

While the barcodes being used for a Coles/Woolworths rollout are possible, I find it more likely that they would integrate the system into their POS.

Whilst this is a step in the right direction, I wonder if Tatts have really thought about this (or really care whether it helps)?
For lottery sales of single or just a few tickets, this change will be good but will payouts generate a barcoded docket with the negative amount – not by the sound of it, will you be able to generate a barcoded docket for the total transaction which for transactions with multiple sales mixed with payouts would be good – it doesn’t look like it.
Sounds to me like someone else with a bit more influence with Tatts requires this change!
Otherwise it’s a good idea not thought through or executed fully!

Tatts would not spend the money for this change simply to make our lives easier. This is not a change made to help Newsagents, more likely a request/demand made by Coles for the Express outlets. They would not have a seperate till for lotto or ring lotto products up manually under a category, so this is definitely their doing.
Just one more thing to consider before doing a massive shopfit for them.
Remember that the Victorian contracts are up in a few years. Intralot will definitely try for the whole monopoly so it may be that the $20-30k you wasted on the counter would have been better spent on something else. Like lotto tickets 🙂
